Cam, question on effexor

Posted by Margaret on December 5, 2001, at 19:33:23

Cam, I understand from reading your posts that you are currently taking effexor(i am a fan of your posts). I saw in a earlier post that you are watching what you eat on the effexor. As you may or may not remember I take paxil and have had a significant weight gain. I would like to try the effexor and see if it will help. I am wondering if I continue to watch my food intake and switch if I will find it easier to lose weight on the effexor. This may be wishful thinking but it can't be worse than the paxil gain. I also think that effexor (from what I have read) is a good ad with less fatigue. Your thoughts on this is apprecitated and I hope you are doing well.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, Margaret. To tell you the truth, I did not gain weight on Paxil (paroxetine) either. I think that this was because it made me so groggy that I couldn't find the kitchen. Also, I only took it for 2 months, and I find that significant weight gain only occurs after about 4 months. I do find that weight gain with Paxil seems to be linked to clinical effect. The better effect, the more weight gain (but this isn't a universal tenet).

People taking Effexor (venlafaxine) do seem to gain less weight than those taking Paxil. This could have something to do with Paxil's blockade of muscarinic and histaminergic receptors, which has been linked to weight gain. The blocking of these receptors, and the fact that Effexor blocks norepinephrine uptake slightly more potently than Paxil, could be why Effexor seems less sedating.

I should warn you though, that just because you have responded to Paxil, may not mean that you will respond to Effexor. There is a good chance you will, but it is not guaranteed. Be sure to talk to your doc about this. Also, many people who do switch from Paxil to Effexor do not lose the weight that they have gained. Also, some people do gain weight taking Effexor. I don't want to scare you, just to let you know.

I hope that this is of some help. - Cam

Thanks Cam, I am hoping I will have a better response with the weight gain. I guess the only thing I seem to have on my side is that although my weight gain with the paxil has been enough to make me unsettled, I still have not gained as much as some others I know. I think I will give it a try in the new year. Not before x-mas for sure. As always I appreciate you candor and hope the snow is not too bad there. I am in Northern BC and we are just starting to get it regularly. It was weird to go into November with no snow. My igloo was starting to look shabby!

Margaret - LOL...My dogteam was having trouble pulling the sled across the snowless plain...until lately. It almost was making me late for work. Thank god for the midnight sun. My U.S. (Fla.) lawyer actually asked if you could get to my town from Edmonton in the winter. I emailed him back and told him that we just got electricity, so he could drive until he saw the houselight. - Cam

Margaret - But wouldn't an "ice box" make the inside of the house cold, too?
