Celexa Phatty . . . Jenny Craig where are you?

Posted by Lini on November 25, 2001, at 19:42:17

I have been on Celexa for one month now and have gained 10 unrelenting pounds. Since I meet with my psych. tomorrow morning, I would love any advice. I was on prozac before and it worked beautifully for my depression, but couldn't keep my eyes open for most of the day. Switched to Celexa and it works even better, but I just can't deal with this weight gain . . with the holidays coming up I am going to turn into the good year blimp. So, main question is this: I am going to push for adding Wellbutrin to the mix. Should I add it to the Celexa or the Prozac? Is weight gain enough of a reason to add wellbutrin? (I don't want to sound like a vain drug popper). Should I look at another drug completely? Seems kinda silly since the last two "worked." Anyway, would love feedback . . . thanks so much!

I have been on Celexa for 2 years but luckily I have not gained any weight. But I know that some poeple do gain weight on different medications. I think that your best choice would be to stay on Celexa since it is working well and add Wellbutrin. That's because if you switch to a different drug than Celexa, the new drug might also cause you to gain weight. Plus, the new drug might not work as well on your depression. Paxil, Remeron, and other drugs also have a weight gain effect on some people.

My oh my.. I have the same problem. Of course I have not been a regular gym bunny for over a month or so. I'm going back to the gym tonight. I need to remember to take it easy on myself and not get compulsive about it.

I got knocked off track the last time because of a nasty sinus infection. Well, it's time to try again.

I'm on 40mg of Celexa per day along with 200mg of WellbutrinSR per day. I don't seem to get the benefit of weightloss from the Wellbutrin. :-( Of course, some of this is genetics. I just went to a funeral on the Polish side of the family and I saw that I was one of the skinniest ones there! Even the women were more husky than me!!! My waist size has gotten to 35"+ so these are some really big people!

I'm glad to see that I can blame some of the weight gain on Celexa. I also know that there are things I can be doing for myself, like exercising and cutting down on ice cream!!! lol!!! ;-)

I have decided to give myself a break. My boyfriend loves the weight I put on. He likes meaty men. Some of the weight is muscle. It was hell trying to maintain a 32" waist even without meds. I'm a big guy, stocky, short arms and legs. I would like to maintain a 34" waist though. That would probably work out to be an ideal size for me.

I look good now but like you I don't want to be a Good Year Blimp by January 1st 2002. I don't want to be huge for my 32nd birthday on January 4th 2002.

Take Care,
Simcha

yes, I know what you're saying. me and the gym have a very rocky relationship. the only consistency is the withdrawal of the monthy membership fee from my bank account.

My doc is very hesitant about adding the Wellbutrin. He thinks that since the SSRIs are working so well, let's stick to the same med family. He is switching me to Zoloft and maybe that will not only keep me smiling, but turn me into a svelte supermodel as well. :)

Hooray to all the significant others that enjoy a little meat on the bones!

Yes, very lucky for you, cause if it weren't for the increasing size of my behind, I would really enjoy Celexa. For whatever reason, my pdoc doesn't want to add Wellbutrin, he would rather just switch to a different SSRI. I think if I push him about it, he would prescribe WB, but I said I would try Zoloft first. Was Celexa the first med you tried? Have you been on WB before? Have combinations worked for you? Thanks for the post - take care,

I got to the gym last night, finally. It felt good to workout again. I keep forgetting what a wonderful stress-relieving activity it is. The only thing is that with my metabolism I never really seem to lose weight, I gain muscle. This is not so bad but I really do not shrink in size. This tendancy seems to be worse (or better depending on how you see it) on the Celexa. Or maybe it's because I'm almost 32 and in my family that means we get hauled off to the phat pharm?

My first med was Prozac. Then it sort of pooped out after a year. I was on 20 mg. I could have increased it to get it to keep working but I have always had anxiety and Prozac was too stimulating for me. Before I quit Prozac I took Wellbutrin with it. Although I didn;t have an eating problem, I think that if I did, Wellbutrin would have helped. From reading posts over the years, people generally seem to like Wellbutrin.

Celexa has been better for me since it has helped both my anxiety and depression. I take 30 mg. Zoloft has an excellent reputation. Good luck with it!
