Could some one explain?

Posted by petey on November 16, 2001, at 17:20:49

After reading so many posts, i am just wondering what "mania" is. Also, could someone please explain what exactly the symptoms of "anxiety" are. Is anxiety when you keep thinking about the same thing day after day? I definitley know what the physical part of anxiety are, but not so sure what the mental part of it is. Thanks!

the IQ of the board recently jumped about a hundred points, which leaves me kind of lost. the words i'm most unfamiliar with but see most often are tinnitus, anhedonia, dysthymia, and anergia. if someone could define these it might help me more with my research. thank you.

Katey - There is a medical dictionary online where you can look up these terms. Here you go:

I have a med dictionary link which I use when reading 'package inserts' on RX List. You know these words like, "Amitriptyline is metabolized by N-demethylation and bridge hydroxylation in man, rabbit, and rat. Virtually the entire dose is excreted as glucuronide or sulfate conjugate of metabolites, with little unchanged drug appearing in the urine. Other metabolic pathways may be involved."
Sometimes, if a word 'appears innocuous', I'll blow it off. Curiosity sets in and when I look it up, it means something to the effect of, say, this med could cause men to grow breasts and has rarely been shown to cause sudden death.
We do need to know these words. Thanks for the new link Cam.

I can explain my manic episodes by saying: When I am cycling, I can be very down, depressed...then I might have some 'up' days when I am 'happy', in the mood to 'go out', sometimes I even spend too much money and go out shopping. My manic episodes have always been less than my down times.

As for my anxiety attacks...well, what you posted is (in my opinion) more along the lines of a Complusive Behavior Disorder. Anxiety for me is not wanting to go to the mall because there are crowds of people there and my heart could, at anytime, start to beat real fast...I start to sweat, and this FEAR takes over my body and I really feel like I could die. (That is why I carry my xanax EVERYWHERE that I go!!) Some people have Social Anxiety where they say, can't talk in front of a group of people, etc....

Oh and I believe that tinnitus is a ringing in the ears. And I believe that dsthymia is a form of depression where you are real down for weeks and just can't seem to get back up (least that is what a friend told me her shrink told her it was when she was diagnosed with it), with it you are real sullen.

P.L.

From first-hand experience, I can tell you that "tinnitus" is ringing in the ears:(
