I take Alprazolam (Generic Xanax). I usually get it from a company called Geneva Pharmaceuticals. This past time the pharmacy filled it with another generic made by Mylan Pharmaceuticals and I took on of the pills and it seemed to have no effect. Is Mylan reliable or should I complain to my pharmacy? What are my rights?

I thought it was my immagination or the fact that I started a new medication, I even had a panic attack for the first time in years. I too got the little round pills from Mylan and THEY DON'T WORK!! The drugstore said they can't switch them for me and that I need a new script from my doc specifiying the brand that I want! Collette

**************************************************I've had the same experience with ativan. I use the brand name now. The FDA has about 1 inspector for every 20 manufacturing plants. There is no contol over storage conditions to and from the plant to the consumer and heat, etc. effectcs the potency.
Aside from that, I've performed my own experiments and the different brands just work differently - especially if your're sensitive to this kind of thing.
So it could be either or both reasons.

The FDA allows generic companies a 20% margin of error in dosage. That means in theory 5mg could be 4mg or 6mg and still be pass.

Mick - If your insurance plan only pays for the "least cost alternative", you have the right to ask your pharmacy to carry a generic brand that is made by the brand name company (ie. "ultrageneric" companies). If the pharmacy refuses, I'd find another pharmacy that will. See my post in the next thread. - Cam

U.S. Regulations are rather lax when it comes to generics. The requirements for bioavailability are feeble. One brand of clonazepam has approximately half of the potency as Klonopin (the name brand). In general I ask my doctor to prescribe the name brand of any medication. It makes titration much easier. Of course I have good insurance and the price difference is small.
