Gallstones from changing eating habits from WB?

Posted by allisonm on October 2, 2001, at 21:02:19

I have been taking Wellbutrin SR since June of 1999 and have lost 35 lbs at the higher doses (currently at 300mg/day). When my WB dose first was increased to the 300 level and higher, meat suddenly no longer appealed, so I stopped eating it about a year and a half ago. I suspect my vegetarian diet has caused some weight loss also.

Now I'm told I have gallstones and am having my gallbladder out next week. I guess the question will be moot once they take the thing out, but I keep wondering whether the WB or the appetite loss/diet changes caused by the WB could have caused the stones to form. Any opinions?

Hi,

When I had my gallbladder out, the surgeon commented on two things, one, gallstones often appear after the birth of the first child (in women, duh)(hmmm, maybe it is because, with the birth I 'lost' 40 lbs?) and two, me being a vegetarian probably helped POSTPONE the formation of stones, as the concentrated bile that the gallbladder produces is in response to the need to digest heavy fats from a meat diet. It is possible, it seems to me, that yours was on the way out anyway. Will you get to see them? Mine looked like split peas or lentils...I never want to experience a gallstone attack again. oh, boy, what pain. Good luck with your surgery. Mine was in 1982, before the 'go through the belly button technique' I have a scar 5" long. Oh, well. BTW I do not take WB and haven't seen gallstone formation as a SE of any medication I have or do take...but anything is possible, I suppose.

Thanks.

I believe now that I had my first attack not long after I started taking a higher dose of WB. Went for more than a year and a half without any pains or vomiting until this last June, July and August, when I had sudden, incapacitating attacks of sharp abdominal pain and vomiting (usually while I was driving or out in public), so I started looking for an answer.

I haven't asked yet to see the stones. I did see several from the ultrasound. I have presurgery testing tomorrow, so maybe I'll ask.

Thanks again for the information. Am hoping the laproscopy works and they don't have to do it the old way.

I don't remember where I read it, but I do seem to remember some literature about gallstone formations due to dietary changes while on WB. Maybe it was something Sal linked to. I think the therory was that rapid weight loss contributed to gallstone formation. I don't think it was the WB that caused the gallstones, but the significant weight loss most of us have. I started taking WB in 1999, weighed 195lbs. I was already eating a fairly Spartan diet, but consumed a few beers. When I quit drinking all together in July, 2000, I began to lose weight quickly. I am now down to 161 and still dropping. I'm actually getting tired of people asking me if I am sick or something, because darned if that doesn't make me start wondering.
