Accutane and St. John's Wort

Posted by agaddy on September 15, 2001, at 11:48:54

Hello,
I am on Accutane and have had mild depression since
starting birth control pills about a year ago. My
sister recommended St.John's Wort as she had great
success with this herb. My mild drepression is not
related to, nor affected by my being on Accutane.

I was wondering if anyone knows of any reason why I
couldn't try the St. John's Wort- ie: if it affects
the liver or kidneys, I wouldn't want to take it till
I finished the Accutane course. I have read a lot about
how good St.John's Wort is for mild depression.

Basically my depression is manifested as a lack of
confidence in myself and less social skills (I find
it hard to act natural with people and it is hard to
make friends).

Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

As you know, Accutane can make you pretty sensitive to the sun. I think that some people become sensitive to the sun on St. John's Wort also. I would talk to your doctor about it in case there are other interactions...and wear a good sunscreen.

I heard the St Johns can interfere with birth control pills. Try Kava Kava instead.

Yes, I just found that info, too. Thanks for the Kava Kava suggestion!

Accutane is a very dangerous medication for people who already have a form of depression. It can in many cases increase the level of depression one is suffering from.

I myself have never had depression. I have actually always been an extremely happy person. Yet the accutane which I took for a month has caused a sometimes extremely severe depression in me. It really doesn't surprise me to read all the suicide stories caused by accutane. I have occasionally had such extreme depression that it is even painful to be alive. I will hang in there. I hope to recover sooner or later. I just hope you reconsider taking your accutane. Clear skin can be great but to damage your mind can be beyond anything you can ever imagine. Take care.
