I have been in recovery for 4 years now from alcoholism and drug addiction. I also suffer from chronic depression and generalized anxiety. I developed an addicion to Xanax due to my anxiety, but it only made things worse for me because I am also an addict. I have tried to quit taking Effexor 4 times since I have been in recovery, and each time I find I just can't function. I also experience withdrawal symptoms including headaches, heart palpitations. I get extremely agitated, and extremely anxious. I have not made it longer than 5 weeks off of the Effexor without just "losing it." Has anyone had this expreience.

I have been clean and sober for 14 years (tomorrow) and was diagnosed with clinical depressiona and anxiety very early on in my recovery. Alot of addicts/alcoholics suffer from a seratonin imbalance in the brain, but it can and MUST be treated. WHY would you want to get off the Effexor? I have accepted the fact that i will be on medication for the rest of myu life, and my life is so much better because of it! As far as the Xanax, it is VERY addictive and would not recommend it to someone trying to stay sober. well, good luck to you.
