Numbness on Prozac

Posted by KARAsweet on August 16, 2001, at 10:21:04

I just got upped to 60 mg for Prozac and am starting to feel apathetic towards many things that would normally bother me.

Has anyone had numb feelings on Prozac or experienced anything close to this?

Prozac has made me very apathetic. I do prefer that to depression, but the last few years I began to realize how this also changed my personality. I have just started working with a pdoc( tonight's my 2nd visit). He put me on Depakote for sleep and staiblization, but frankly I don't think that is what I need. I will discuss stimulants as well as other drugs that I have learned about here with him this evening.

60 mgs of Prozac seems to work better for me than 40 mgs. I still feel joy and happiness, but I also don't cry [which is good]; and think a little detachment is a much better way to get along in this life and society. I don't want to wear my heart of my sleeve. It hurts too much. I don't feel my personality is changed; it's still me, only better. A little apathy is okay. [Just my humble opinion]

I felt apathetic on 40mg, along with a bit of anxious selfishness and disregard for other peoples' emotions. I also found it harder to feel deeply. When I realized the effects Prozac was having on my temperament, it was enough to make me go back to therapy and quit meds altogether.

Looking back, I did very well about a year ago when I took myself down to 20mg. I think there's an optimum dose of that stuff (that's different for everyone) above which it shifts your temperament too far away from its depressive baseline. On 40mg of Prozac I lost a good deal of my sensitivity, which I think's a positive piece of my depressive personality.

Anyway, my drug-free experiment only lasted about a month and a half. I'm still in therapy, but I'm also taking Effexor. Effexor tempers my sensitivity without choking it off. So far it's made a wonderful change for the better in my life.

Good luck, and I hope my experience helps you better understand your own.

Hi ...
Thought I'd add to the other comments here. I'm on 10 mg of Prozac (I take low doses due to med sensitivity.) I started about 2 months ago, and just recently discovered how it is making me "numb" in some sense -- but for me it's a good one!

My in-laws came into town this week, and are staying with us. Normally, I get totally stressed out before they come -- I try to get everything perfect for them to the point where I get very burned out and resentful. This time, however, I really didn't do much at all, except for the basics -- getting the guest room ready, the towels out, things straightened up. I am not a "Martha Stewart" type at all, and this time, I'm not trying to pretend I'm one. I feel much calmer with them here, and I'm not worrying all the time about what they think of me.

Kind of a long story to say that Prozac numbness may not be all bad!
