Side Effects of Effexor

Posted by Pat456 on August 10, 2001, at 8:40:17

Hi, I would like to know if anyone has experienced the problems I have. I have been seeing a dermatologist for a skin problem that started after I started taking Effexor. Nothing helps. I wake up in the middle of the night nauseated. I have spells of sweating. I am bloated and constipated. I have strange headaches that started after Effexor. I have strange tingles in my mouth and brain. I am constantly thirsty. I don't sleep well and I'm always tired. I feel like a zombie. I tried twice to stop Effexor. I saw my doctor yesterday to stop the Effexor. I was taking 75 mg a day. She wants me to take 37.5 mg a day for a week then stop. I know I will have the really bad feeling for a while but this time I'm coming off. Has anyone else had skin problems while taking Effexor?
Thanks, Pat

hi Pat,

I've been on Effexor only for a month, and had to go off it because of the side effects, but during this short time it managed to completely cure my psoriasis. I do not know why or how it happened, but it does affect skin somehow. I have never expected my psoriasis to heal with anything, and least of all with antidepressants. Once I got rid of it, I actually saw a psychiatrist who works in a dermatological clinic, because I was curious about the mechanism of the cure and wanted to know if my skin will ever go bad again. By the time I saw her, I was no longer depressed either, but she dismissed that lightly and prescribed me a ton of antipsychotics for she decided that I was bipolar (???). So I still do not know the answer. My own conclusion is that effexor does affect skin, in people with healthy skin it might cause deviation from the norm, in people with unhealthy, 'deviated from norm' skin , it brings it back to norm.

I know that it could've been a carryover effect or effect of order, since I had been on two other antidepressants prior to effexor, but in your case it seems to be irrelevant anyway.

Hi Pat,

severe constipation and very painful bloated abdomen generally during the first four to six days, nausea, and then psychological effect: it made me evil, cruel, antisocial, coldblooded. No anxiety, no depression, as intended, but a total switch in personality (I am rather shy and very careful with people who surround me normally.)

I just had to get off it, or else. The bad part was that when I noticed it was almost too late, I managed to destroy all of my close friendships. It's when I moved on to my family members I got some dim awareness that I was out of my wits, that something was wrong with me. The very next day I switched to Celexa.

what do you have?

mila
