Celexa to St John's Wort

Posted by missx on July 27, 2001, at 10:42:36

I have been on celexa for 9 months and I really like it. I feel very normal and productive in my life whereas before I was anxious, worried a lot, had general depression, etc. The only thing is that it has made me gain weight. I went from a size 3 to sizes 6,8 and 10. Had to replace part of my wardrobe which was pretty expensive. I have been attempting to wean myself off of celexa and switch to St John's Wort which is an herbal alternative. In my online research, it seems as though many many people have successfully made the transition to the herbal alternative and love it. I'm experiencing depression, irritability, dizzy spells while trying to get off the celexa. I'm trying to get my own business off the ground and have a lot of new people to deal with and big decisions to make so I'm gonna go back to the celexa until the timing is a little better to make the switch. Has anyone else here had experiences getting off celexa? Anyone who moved to the herbal successfully?

I used both together for a while, with no ill effects. When I quite the Celexa I crashed.
I would suggest adding a stimulant, (Ritalin, Adderall. Dexedrine, etc.) if you can get
it, and continuing it with your Celexa. This has limited my appetite, and the effects of
the stimulant-anorectic with the SSRI have continued for many years.

Hi,
I also considrered St. John's Wort and did quite a bit of research over the web, but I only tried it for a week or so -- it seemed to make me tired. Actually, I'm not sure if it was the SJW making me tired, or my depression getting worse. Anyway, a major study written up in Time Magazine (an April issue, I think) indicates that for major depression, SJW isn't effective. I think in my case, this is true.

After trying medication after medication with many difficulties, I would hate to see someone give up on a med that really seems to work for them (eg, the Celexa for you :)

Jojo's idea of adding stimulants is a good one -- also, Wellbutrin made me lose weight when I combined it with SSRIs.

Good luck and take care,
cindy

I tried SJW for about a year. I am now on Celexa. Celexa works better. I have no weight gain or appetite increase but some people do get that with AD's. I would stay on the Celexa and try to add something for appetite such as Wellbutrin, a stimulant, or possible SJW. But once again, I would stay on Celexa since it is working for you.
