Increased NOREPIN. = anxiety? HELP!!

Posted by Janelle on July 15, 2001, at 21:11:46

A few (perhaps many) of the so-called SSRI's are really just SRI's because they also inhibit the re-uptake of Norepinephrine. Is the possibility that these a-d's cause increased level of Norepinephrine a factor/something that can cause ANXIETY? Thanks.

If re-uptake of norepinephrine is a result of an SSRI, why do the drug manufacturers and monographs not say this? Effexor is the only one which is claimed to have this effect officially.

My pdoc told me that quite a few of the "SSRI"'s work on both SEROTONIN and NOREPINEPHRINE (Paxil being an example), but when Effexor first came out there was some kind of problem with their capsules (hard to swallow or something), so the manufacturer of Effexor lost ground to other new a-d's and in order to regain momentum, the manufacturer of Effexor pushed (marketing, politics) and probably shelled out big bucks for its Effexor to be "the only anti-depressant recognized by the FDA as effective for generalized anxiety" !! In a nutshell, it boils down to a combo of politics, money and marketing strategy as the reason why Effexor is the only one which is claimed to have this effect officially.

Sure, but excessive serotonin can cause anxiety too. Yep, the "ssri's" do boost norepinephrine and dopmamine(esp. Prozac and Zoloft)levels as well as serotonin. The older tricylics which boost norepinephrine more than serotonin are commonly used for generalized anxiety disorder. Fen-fen (fenfluramine/fluoxetine) which was used for weight control is a serotonin releasing agent and one of its side effects is anxiety. In other words, you can't just simplify it to "more serotonin is calming, more norepi causes anxiety".
