Doc considering MOOD STABLIZER; need info please!

Posted by Janelle on July 11, 2001, at 15:39:30

My pdoc is considering both a-d and mood stabilizer for me. I know many of the a-d's but mood stabilizers are new to me. Would appreciate knowing names, common ("typical") side effects, etc. THANKS!

Janelle: Here are some names: You can do a search on any of them (on PB and/or the internet) and find out more information on each one, including side effects:

Carbamazepine (Tegretol)
Divalproex (Depakote, Depakene, Valproate, Valproic Acid)
Gabapentin (Neurontin)
Lamotrigine (Lamictal)
Lithium
Verapamil

I am on a mood stablizer, depakote, no AD as they make my symptoms worse. 'World expert' I saw for a second opinion, said the idea in BPII is to stablize the highs, he recommended Depakote, then recommended lithium after 6 months. He felt Lamotrigine (new med) would be good for depression, but I had already tried it and had problems. He was emphatic about not using AD with BPII. This whole process is so trial and error. Good luck, ask lots of questions.

Thank you both so very much for the info. ShelliR, that list is great; I will write those names down and do research on them. SusanC, my pdoc is starting to think an a-d alone will not do the trick for me, though it had in the past. But I've had hypomania episodes and increasingly strong obsessive, racing thoughts, and I think these are what is making doc lean toward a mood stablizer. Thanks again for your responses!

Susan C.,

Just curious--what sorts of problems did you have
on Lamictal?

Lamictal is lamotrigine, right? swollen glands. As the pdoc had stuck the fear of god in me (he had experienced patient who ignored symptoms and allergic type response that lead to the body fighting itself like cancer and died soon after..I think I remember it right) I was very sensitive to any changes, so when one of my neck glands got tender, we said,'next'. I understand it can be wonderful for some people in controlling the depression side of bipolar II. I generally have strange responses to med, either no change, a side effect that doesnt show up on the list, or it works. 08/2000 Limotregine, swollen glands, bizzare dreams
09/2000 Topamax, completely “dead” disconnected, sleeping 5 of 7 days 10/2000 Tegretol, Itching all over > Susan C.,
