Beginner prozac question

Posted by Def Bond on May 5, 2001, at 5:58:51

hi,

I've recently searched the Psycho-babble postings and was interested in
some advice please. I'm an american living in France and am having a
problem with stress, anxiety, and depression. Recently, I went to see
my general practitioner and he gave a prescription for an antidepressor
here in France called Ixel (Milnacipran), which blocks both serotonin
and noradrenaline reuptake. I tried it for a couple of days and gave it
up because the side effects made me feel bad. The side effects consisted
of vertige, nausea, and insomnia. Next, I tried liquid prozac, starting
with 2 milligrams. I felt confused and had difficulty completing
phrases, or driving a vehicle for two or three days. Previously, I've
tried celexa with similar results and gave up taking it too. Is there
any advice that you can give for starting an AD and getting through the
side effects ? My work involves writing software and I can't imagine
trying to work while taking this kind of medication. Also, do you know
anything about Milnacipran and if so, how does it compare to a drug like
Prozac ? It's really confusing trying to choose one of these drugs and
deciding to stick it through ... For now, I'm taking Ambien each night.

>Hi, I don't know about liquid Prozac, but you seem med sensitive like many people. The best thing [in my opinion] would be to start Prozac at 10 mg for 7 to 10 days and let your body get used to it before going to 20 mgs. I went to 40 mgs after 4 weeks on 20 mgs with my pdoc's approval, but I started at 10 mgs. Whatever med you decide to take, you can take half the dose they tell you to start. Many people are started too high and then give up on the med because of the side effects and they say it does'nt work because they never gave it the proper chance; start low and then go to the next dose and give it 4 to 6 weeks. Prozac has changed my life. Good luck to you.

I had to start with liquid prozac. Yummy, huh? I had the opposite problem though. I had to start so low because it made me too hyper. I felt like I was going to jump out of my skin. I had to take it with valium. Now I take it with topamax.

Karen K,

I would appreciate your advice on starting low on the Prozac. I have been taking celexa 10mg with some success for the last year, but I can sleep my life away.
So I switched to 10mg Prozac to give it a try. I am sensitive to meds, so the reason for the low dose. After 2 days I felt energetic and positive. But a few days later I began to feel like I could also jump out of my skin.
I was disappointed because I was feeling good, but the jitters and some insomnia have been making it tough.
I would like to continue on the Prozac because besides the hyper feeling I felt better than on the celexa.
Are you now able to take it without the topamax ? What is topomax ? Is it addicting ?
I am so sensitive to the antidepressants, that I am thinking about trying the liquid prozac at only 5mg, thinking that maybe I am taking too much for my sensitive system, and maybe a very lite dose may do the trick.
Have you tried this low of a dose with success ?
Your comments would be appreciated.

Thanks
JB

JB,
I started out at 1/4 tsp with 5mg of valium back in 1992 I think. I tapered up slowly over the years. I switched over to 10mg capsules in 1995(I think). I got my teaspoons mixed up with my tablespoons before an early morning flight. Oops! Now I take 40mg with 100mg topamax in the morning and 125mg topamax in the evening. My ex was a substance abuser and passed away recently and the valium made my son nervous. That's why I switched to the topamax. It's not addictive. I'm an ex-drinker so this is much better for me.
