Anyone know anything about...

Posted by NikkiT2 on April 30, 2001, at 14:47:52

I saw my therp / psychologist again today, and she gave me what she is certain is my diagnoses... I didn't write it down, but I think it was Schizotropic... Schizo something (no, not phrenia!)...

I'd never heard of it...

From "Psychology" (R. Gross):

"Schizotypal disorder refers to eccentric behaviour & unusual thinking & affect which resemble those seen in schizophrenia but w/o definite & characteristic schizophrenic abnormalities"

Is this you? You don't come across as 'odd'.

I still say personality disorders & the like are all too commonly dx'd in England, when really the patient has treatment-resistant depression, inadequately treated by the limited armaments @ the disposal of the NHS.

I for example, loosely fit the criteria for a no. of personality disorders, particularly Schizoid & Borderline. However this is just a result of the way my depression manifests itself. I have no p. disorder! However the fact that under normal circumstances, my symptoms are *very* stable, makes it look as such.

*Personally*(!) speaking, I don't pay a blind bit of notice to what psychotherapists say; they have had plenty of opportunity to f*ck with my head already. I don't care for their theories one bit, but each to their own I guess...

What do you think about it all? I wouldn't be over the moon...

A diagnosis is only as useful as it is useful.

I, too, am rather skeptical of personality disorder diagnoses.

Of course, it it helps to organize how to think about the problems a person is having, and helps to shed light on how to address the problems effectively, then it is useful.

Agree with all of the above. My problem with personality disorders is that the dx of one seems to give the physician a remit to halt further medical treatment. After all you can't alter someone's personality, can you? I must confess some ignorance in this matter. Wouldn't the treatment just comprise extensive psychotherapy, if anything at all? (anyone know any better?)

It was after I was refused further medication that I was handed a personality questionaire (which after reading, I promptly handed back). I think my pdoc was looking to explain the complete ineffectiveness of 9mths of his psychotherapy (CBT, BT, Group etc), I have been told by 3 English pdocs (the latter 2 of whom will have seen the 1st pdoc's notes & his errant conclusions) that I must 'learn to live' with suicidal depression. Yeah, yeah, good advice.

Rantette over.

I don't really care what they call me... but, alot of the bits do fit me.. I have been hiding how I feel for over 10 years, and am now an expert in it!!! I am probably the exact opposite of how most people see me..
