Ritalin and sleep

Posted by e503 on April 9, 2001, at 20:24:05

My daughter takes ritalin during the day. She cannot take clonidine. SHe has much difficulty falling asleep at night. She tried remeron and it did help for a while. THe problem is that she gaiined weight and she is only 10 years old and it really started to bother her. Can anyone recommend something to help her fall asleep that she won't gain weight with? I am on serzone, but it really does not help me sleep so far ----I am up to 100 mg. i take at night. She has tried wellbutrin (for add) and she broke out terribly...she has tried paxil and zoloft and both made her worse (depressed). HELP!!! she is up all hours of the night. Any ideas?

> Hi --
what I suggest is predicated on my own experience with adderall [another stimulant], and insomnia.
I have ADD and really cannot function without meds, as I presume is the case with your daughter. I agree
that gaining weight is not an option for a young lady who already has enough *stuff* to deal with from ADD/HD.
When is her last dose?
I found that I had to fool around with the dose schedule like mad -- and with my pdoc cooperation.
It's not written in stone that each dose has to be equal. I take a stronger dose in the morning, and two smaller
doses at noon and with dinner. The last dose is only necessary because life as a grad student demands that I work
until about 10 PM.
It's difficult to offer suggestions without knowing dose and frequency -- how much and how often?
How long has she been on ritalin?
Was insomnia a problem before ritalin?
I tend to agree that you should be cautious before adding another med to counteract the effects of the first.
Perhaps with some more info I can suggest???
S. :)

All of these are viable options for her:

Over-the-counter: Benadryl, Tylenol Simply Sleep

SRI + NRI: Venlafaxine

Non-addictive and minor Benzodiazepines: Ambien, Sonata

Anxiolytics: Serax, Restoril

Atypical Neuroleptics (which last throughout the next day): Risperdal, Seroquel, Geodon

Anticonvulsants: Divalproex XR, Carbamazepine XR, Gabapentin, Lamotrigine.

my son takes risperdol and he gained too much weight. She (my daughter) tried neurontin and after a few days it did nothing for her. Maybe I should try benedryl. She takes 10 mg. ritalin in the a.m. , 5 mg. at lunch and 5 mg. at about 4. She always did have problems sleeping, even as an infant. She does have a lot of anxiety from the ritalin....and she does have other issues she is trying to deal with (her brother is autistic, and both she and him are adopted,,,PLUS, as a little one (23 months old) she was diagnosed with ALL (childhood leukemia) and was on chemo for 2 1/2 years. SHe is doing fine now with that,,,,but there's a lot of stuff she is trying to deal with. HELP!
