For any of you out there who have tried Protriptyline, brand name Vivactil, I would appreciate your feedback. Did you find it stimulating? What were the side effects? Thanks,
Kathy

I didn't find that it was stimulating. Even if it is stimulating for some, it couldn't be as much of a stimulant as buproprion or tranylcypromine can be.
I didn't take it long enough to find out anything else about it.

>I am currently on 450mg Wellbutrin SR and do not find it stimulating at all. I mine as well be on a sugar pill for all the good it's doing. I did great on methylphenidate but I can't get anyone to prescribe it. Nothing else seems to help my dysthmia, anhedonia and social phobia. I am unipolar. I have tried amisulpride, sulpride, reboxetine, SSRI's, TCA's and lithium, all without success. Any suggestions?

Here's some stuff that you may consider:
Nefazodone - great for sleep; no sexual dysfunction; no anticholinergics side-effects.
Lamotrigine - good side-effect profile; most antidepressant properties
Carbamazepine - less side effects than Lithium or divalproex sodium
Topiramate - the newest mood-stabilizer; it promotes weight loss
Desipramine - the least side-effects of all the Tricyclics; one of the SNRIs
High-dose Venlafaxine - at higher doses Venlafaxine affects more chemicals than SSRIs.
Buspirone - an effective antidepressant and anxiolytic at high doses.
Dopamine Agonists - Pramipexole has two studies on it (I took it for a while).
"Power Combinations" - Remeron+Effexor; Wellbutrin+Remeron, Remeron+Prozac
Augmentation of anything you have tried before with Lithium, Pindolol, or Buspar (i take pindolol now)
Atypical Neuroleptics/Antipsychotics with antidepressant properties: Risperidone, Olanzapine, Seroquel, Zeldox
Provigil - a stimulant that is possibly effective
Irreversable MAOIs - Phenelzine, Tranylcypromine. Extremely Effective.
MAOI-B - Selegiline, an antidepressant almost comparable to Phenelzine.

> KathyI have tried Protriptyline. I couldn't endure it for more than a week. Side effects to me were harsh. Stimulating, somewhat. I liked that part of it. But it made my ears ring real loud, made it very difficult to go to the bathroom, super dry mouth, etc. It had all the side effects you might expect from a tricyclic, except they were a lot more powerful side effects than I had counted on.
My pharmacist tells me there is one customer in town who has taken Vivactil for quite some time now with good results.

Thanks! I appreciate your suggestions. I have tried several that you mentioned w/o success. Lamotrigine & Selegiline are two that I plan to try.

Thanks John! I guess the only way to know if it will work for me is to give it a try...Everyone's mileage will differ...or so the saying goes.
