Visken vs Generic Pindolol?

Posted by SalArmy4me on March 28, 2001, at 20:55:21

Does anyone find that there is a difference (in antidepressant augmentative quality) between the brand Visken and the generic pindolol?

Background: I have used brand Visken successfully several times to augment antidepressants.

James here.....

Yes, Visken contains both stereo isomers, pindolol does not.

Hi James.

I have a few questions for which I hope data is available.:

Which of the two isomers is the most potent antagonist of NE alpha-1a autoreceptors?

Which of the two isomers is the most potent antagonist of NE beta receptors?

I didn't know that pindolol was stereoisomeric. There is a growing field in psychopharmacological research to determine which of the isomers of any given psychotropic is most active, and to investigate whether it is as effective as the racemic mixture with reduced side-effects. My first guess regarding pindolol is that its NE-alpha 1a antagonism is what is most important in its production of antidepressant activity. If one can keep this property and lose the beta-blocking property, I think it would be more tolerable for people who are hypotensive or are already experiencing hypotensive side-effects intrinsic to some antidepressants.

Thanks.

By the way, how have you been?

For what it's worth my pdoc won't prescribe generic pindolol - only 'real Visken'. I didn't have any success with Visken augmentation but that doesn't mean others won't respond. I had no noticable side effects either.

Good question, I have no answers.

I think every molicule can have several isomers and suspect here we are talking about d or l isomers.

ISP I was at died so I have a new job at a big ISP (same pay but benifits and better working conditions !) Was hoping for a better paying job after a round of interviews but nothing turned up. Shoot ! I think I over interviewed and came off knowing too much and being too qualified for what the pay was. Little do they know that ISP's don't pay well and I would be happy as a clam at what they would pay. I left Retail management in 1995 because I was burned out but still am not back to my old pay rate. it does not help that I am not near a big city but something will turn up soon.
