Has Anyone been on Wellbutrin SR Xanax 0.5??????

Posted by Lori Mason on March 14, 2001, at 14:18:28

I will be starting tomorrow on wellbutrin SR I have already been on Xanax 0.5 three times a day.. off and on for 7 years and will be weened off of that as soon as Wellbutrin kicks in..Has anyone out there been on the two? and if so how did it make you feel? Xanax of course makes me sleepy..I was just wondering if maybe the two would balance out as I am not a pill person and just get anxieties on what I read about Wellbutrin SR. Lori

hi Lori

I started out on Wellbutrin SR and switched over to the immediate release version of Wellbutrin because the SR gave me some sideeffects I don't get with the immediate release. Anyway, I really like it. I like the high level of functioning that I have. (I take currently 75mg 3x a day = 225mg/day)

The thing is, I wouldn't say that it helps my anxiety level much. I am trying to find a long term drug so that I don't have to take ativan for anxiety. I have recently added serzone at night, 50 mg. I have had success in the past with serzone significantly effecting my anxiety levels.
The wellbutrin calms slightly, but doesn't do much when hit with quick onset PANIC. I find with the immediate release version that I have to stay on schedule or I become sleepy.

Hope this is somewhat helpful. It is tough to get used to the wellbutrin at first, so just know that you need to tough it out a little. There's anxiousness and agitation and sometimes fits of rage. All that levels off between 2-4 weeks, but from what I've read that is very common. For me, it was very worth being patient. At 4 weeks I really started to feel significant help and leveling out of emotions and thoughts.

HI terra,
Well I started the Wellbutrin SR and I already don't like it. the agitation is just awful, made more anxiety for me. The Xanax if I take it together however levels it off but makes me completely sleepy. Yes I am becoming Irritable and snapping at my family. been on it only 4 days now.. 150mg/twice day. I'm not really sure why they put me on an anti-depressent, when I have Panic attacks and anxiety not depression. I told them this but was told that the anxiety and panic has alot to do with depression. I don't know they are the doctors. I don't feel depressed, just have these attacks out of nowwhere maybe 3 times a week. I was told Wellbutrin SR is used also for Anxiety & Panic disorder. My attacks are mostly when I am out and about, I call it and have heard it called Social Anxiety. Anyhow I'm gonna talk to my doctor next week about it, I dont think I should be on Wellbutrin, but maybe something like Paxil or Zoloft..or something for just Anxiety. Thanks alot for your feedback!! :0)

When I had the same symptoms, my pdoc immediately lowered the dose and had me increase slowly. That sounds like a lot to be starting at (total is 300mg?). That could account for what's happening. I know that I started at 150mg once a day and couldn't handle that, so I dropped down to 100mg for 5 days and then went back up. I also switched to drinking half-strength coffee. And since I feel not hunger or thirst urges, I find my irritability goes away if I eat of drink something if it's been too long.

I'm not really sure why they put me on an anti-depressent, when I have Panic attacks and anxiety not depression. I told them this but was told that the anxiety and panic has alot to do with depression.

I'm also trying to treat anxiety and panic and have heard the same, that they have a lot to do with depression.

I think it's great that you get to see your doc next week. Sometimes it seems to take forever to get in. Another thought is that if you mentioned that weightgain was an issue for you, then your doc might have gone for the wellbutrin first since paxil tends to cause weightgain (from what I hear.... never tried it) and some say zoloft is sedating.... but it's different for everybody. Just thinking.

I hope things work out for you.

HI again Terra,
Tried Paxil had severe reaction to it so thats out...I stopped the Wellbutrin SR (been on it 4 whole days) Couldnt take the common side effects as they call it. Trying something new, Trying some breathing exercises..and cutting back slowly on my xanax. Zoloft they said would make you very sleepy..but so does the xanax and its very addictive. I would rather not have to be on meds..I'm not a pill person..Taking something new for me is like a child learning how to walk. I'm actually afraid to try new things, It took me over a week to start the xanax. But now I know what it does to me, I dont mind. I am also cutting back on my caffiene..cause they say that can agravate it even more. I am glad I have someone like you to talk too..cause actually I'm not seeing my Pyschiatrist next week, I'm seeing my therapist I should have worded that different..It takes over a month to get back in to see the Pyschiatrist. She dont want me back for a month. It took me two months to even get in to see her the first time. I'm glad there are message boards like this one out there to have someone to talk too otherwise I would go nutz for sure. My husband is no help cause he has problems himself, and he is on Xanax but alot stronger than what I am on..and he likes them, and says he will stay on them for the rest of his life. NOT me!! I asked him one day what if our family doctor died or decided to retire..would mean you would have to find another doctor that would be willing to put you on xanax, and let me tell you there are not many of them out there. They would rather taper him off and put him on something else. My family doctor beleives in the sedatives, and we have been seeing him for 11 years. so my husband would be very lost if something happened. God forbid that happens. He is already addicted to his meds..I however am not as bad and am down to 1 a day compared to 2-3 a day. Anyhow thanks for the feedback and keep talking to me and letting me know how you are doing.
