Question For Cam W. Re: Brand Name Stelazine

Posted by Michael F on March 1, 2001, at 22:33:50

Hi Cam,

Actually this is a two part question :) Up until about two months ago, I was taking 1mg of brand name Stelazine 2x per day, with each of my my two doses of Dexedrine. As I am sure you are aware, the manufacturer has discontinued production of the brand name of Stelazine in Canada.

Since I have started taking the generic form, I haven't been fairing well at all. I had to stop it due to depression and lethargy. I am getting by on Amisulpride but it poops out after about two weeks.

My first question to you is, is my reaction to the generic form plausible or not? I believe my pharmacist does not believe me with regard to the differences I have noticed between the generic and the brand name of Stelazine. I believe what I am experiencing is real, however I really would appreciate your input to help put my mind at ease.

Secondly, if it is plausible that there is enough of a difference between the generic and the brand name of Stelazine to cause the problems I mentioned, I would like to know if the brand name is available in the US. I am not sure you have this particular info. If you don't, could you please point me in the right direction to find an answer to this question?

I appreciate any help you can provide!

All the best,

Michael

Michael - Generic companies, many of which are subsidiaries of brand-name companies, are required by law (in Canada) to have pharmacokinetic patterns within 5% of the brand name drug. Lots are teated for this. I have heard of the problem that you are talking about more frequently with Valium over generics (but hesitate as to a lack of efficacy explanation, because brand name Valium can be sold for a higher price in the street).

Another explanation for the lack of efficacy of the tablets is that they could have been nearing expiry date. If it continues, ask the drug store to bring in a different brand of Stelazine generic. I have never had a problem with the Apotex brand.

I do not know the US's requirements for generic drugs, though.

Hope this helps - Cam

US rules are pretty much the same as Canada's.
