Generic Ritalin Effective?

Posted by Sandee on February 4, 2001, at 19:07:51

I recently had to get generic Ritalin SR instead of the name brand. I took it and it had No effect. I've taken the regular Ritalin before and could tell the difference like Wow! This is the first time I've taken the generic Ritalin SR.

Is generic Ritalin effective?

I would have to guess that the release mechanism is to blame.

Sandee-- I just read an article in a newsletter that my local parent advocacy group is investigating charges that children on Medicaid have to *fail* on generic ritalin before being prescribed the genuine item.
Not fact, but enough complaints to launch an investigation.
In my personal experience, I know that generic percoset does NOTHING at all.

Other possibilities: dose is too low -- how much are you taking? Remember that most of the studies [especially for concerta, the time-release form of ritalin] were done on children.
Adult dosages should be adjusted up carefully.

Is your pharmacy trustworthy? Perhaps the med has expired.

Last thought: some folks don't respond to ritalin, tho usually they just respond badly or it doesn't do enough.
Ask doc about a higher dose or different med.
I know you are not supposed to take amphetamines with grapefruit juice -- something about bioflavonids de-activating the med -- perhaps a similar issue w/ ritalin?

Hope things work out for you.
