Please Help!!! ??Bi-polar,anxiety-treatments????

Posted by Nic on January 28, 2001, at 13:31:50

Was wondering what has work for anyone taking medications to treat Bi-Polar disorder, plus anxiety, panic and depression.

Started out taking Prozac for depression about 6 years ago, later on I was diagnosed as having a bi-polar disorder after a severe manic attack. Continued on Prozac plus trazadone. After several years I got off the Prozac because it always made me too nervous.

Got started on Serzone and ativan and worked well but seemed to need more ativan as time went in order to help with the panic attacks.

Currently still on Serzone plus Klonopin.
Now I feel like I am going backwards on my depression and I am still panicky, but even worser, now also suffer from burst of anger.

Any comments or advice would be much appreciated.

Kind Regards,

Nic

For possible BP disorder, anxiety, insomnia and panic attacks, I was given depakote (an anti-convulsant) and seroquel (an anti-psychotic). They worked quite well...my only complaint is some "emotional flattening" or "blunting", whatever you want to call it...I still find it preferable to anxiety.
Good luck-
Gracie

> Fish oil capsules contain a fatty acid called EPA that controls bi-polar disorder naturally, with no side effects. Take 2 grams of EPA via fish oil pills (buy a potent, good brand). There are studies that have recently been done to prove it works, and my sister has serious bi-polar disorder, and it works for her greatly! Go on the internet and look it up for yourself. Type in keywords "fish oil bi-polar" and read for yourself.

Nic,
Antidepressants without a good mood stablizer like lithium, depakote, or tegretol is a no-no for bipolar folks. It makes you manicky. Have you ever been on a ms? It really can be a lifesaver.

> Nic,

Sorry didn't really answer the question. My son takes tegretol xr and lithium. After many, many drug trials this seems to be the combo that works for him. Hope you find what works for you.

Nic,

I take a combo of Zyprexa (2.5mgs) and Neurontin (900mgs daily) and it has not only done wonders for my BP II symptoms, but I noticed a marked decrease in my anxiety as well. I do take Xanax (.5mg as needed) when I have those severe anxiety days. I try to avoid the Xanax whenever possible as I was starting to develop some addiction to it.

Hope this helps.

Greg

Nic: Bipolar w/o a Mood Stabilizer?

Nic,

I want to reiterate Karen's concern regarding the absence of a mood stabilizer. Are you taking an MS also or just the Serzone plus Klonopin? If no MS, does your pdoc agree with your bipolar dx? If he/she does, I can't imagine why you would not be on an MS as part of your med combo!

I am BP II taking Lithobid (MS), Prozac, and Wellbutrin. My meds are currently working great and, although anxiety and panic have never been a large factor in my disorder, my current meds allow me to be more calm and less anal than I was prior to medication.

Nic, please follow up with your pdoc regarding the appropriateness of adding an MS if you are not already taking one.

Ron,(Karen,Nic,) et al -
Might I suggest Karen, that you mention you mention Topamax to your pdoc.
Though I have never been on other mood stabalizers, I find this to be quite
nice with side effects minimal and pretty much nonexistant after a month
two. Carry on. Maribeth
