Posted by T~ on September 20, 2000, at 7:19:31

does anyone know what can or does cause a low/no sex drive (libido) in some woman?? and if there is an herbal/over the counter/RX that will correct this problem?? i am only '30 something' and this is very fustrating not only to me but also to my husband.
HELP anyone!! (just a note: i have been on celexa for 5 weeks and buspar for 6 days also BUT this was a problem BEFORE i had been treated for depression and anxiety)

James here.....

If this was a problem b4 the meds then you would want to discuss this with your gyn. It would be best to really know what is wrong b4 you start blindly treating with herbs.

Hi T,

Check with your doctor, but many women respond well to very small doses of the male hormone testosterone, taken orally or used as an ointment.

The only really sensible book I've found about women's hormonal concerns in general is called "Screaming to Be Heard," written by a female gynecologist. This encyclopedic volume discusses issues and research that I have not seen compiled anywhere else. My wife takes a copy to the doctor with her to discuss alternatives to "conventional wisdom."

Looking it up at Amazon.com, I see other women have even described this book as "a lifesaver." If you can't wait, order the existing edition -- you won't be sorry you spent $22 on your health. The new edition was supposed to come out in June and now October, but we've been waiting a long time for it, and I'll believe it exists when I see it in stock.

Basically, there is no reason for a healthy woman in her thirties (or forties or fifties) to have little or no sex drive unless that's the way she wants to be.

Best wishes,

Mark H.

T-

Here's a link to OBGYN.net. I've learned more about health problems and issues specific to women from this site than from any other so far. Go into Forum and then into Women's Health Forum.

Dunno, but my SO (male) has no sex drive either, so I'll offer my heartfelt condolences and best wishes!

He's not on drugs (other than insulin), and he is really overwhelmed with stress, but it is a problem for us. My sex drive may not be overwhelming, but it's certainly enough to make me feel like a nymphomaniac when I'm the only one to initiate -- and am usually rebuffed...

Good luck, and do let us know what you discover!

I have the same problem and I am not 100% sure if it is the AD's or a biological problem related to hormone levels, etc. I told my OB/GYN and she sort of ignored the issue.

My psych has added Wellbutrin and Adderal but I have not found either to help much with the lack of desire.

I have heard that Gingko biloba can help and I would recommend trying this. I just bought a bottle myself.

I may see a new OB/GYN too to see if any hormone replacement is in order. I'm seeing a therapist for some issues in mychildhood that I'm sure play a factor in this problem, so there can be many
contributing issues.

Good luck to finding the answers(s).

I agree with James...try and figure out why and/or discuss it with a gyn. I do know that L-lysine helped my sex drive problem some but ultimatly, for me, my problem was my ex husband (i was only medicated a year of our three year marrage) who was mentally and verbally abusive. Enough to kill the best sex drive--and it took me about a year to get it back.

Dont know if this will help but does it fluctuate at all? Have you tried noting how your cycle runs? Hormone fluctuations (for me at least) can be weird--does anyone else almost rage during that PMS stage?

No matter waht...good luck

amie
