Well, I am basically computer illiterate, I could just barely learn enough to get to this site! But, if anyone knows how to set up a chat room, we would be able to actually have dialogues.
As far as 'how' to lose the weight, I think that it should be each individual's choice. I read a very good book where a doctor interviewed people who had lost large amounts of weight, and kept the weight off for as long or longer than five yrs. The book basically said, do the research on nutrition and excercise, and then instead of going all out, change your unhealthy habits to healthy ones bit by bit. Choose changes in your lifestyle that you know you can keep doing. After all, even small changes will cause weight loss in the long run. But, if you make drastic changes, you are less likely to stick to it. Well, this makes sense to me, but we all have to do what we truly think will work, and keep working. CarolAnn

A suggestion for the ladies...

Ladies,

I might suggest that you all download the free version of AOL's Instant Messenger as a communication tool. You can set up your own chat room specific to your group, and talk that way. If any of you would like help in doing this I'd be glad to assist you, just contact my e-mail and I'll walk you thru. I can tell this is important to all of you and would be glad to help.

Personally, I kinda like my "love handles..:^)

Good luck to all of you,

Hugs,
Greg

> I know it was my idea but I'm a little stumped as to how we go about it, the organization, the plan. Do we pick one of the famous diets out there and follow it or do we just see if we can eat healthy and exercise and kick eachother's butts when we can't. ANY IDEAS???

Tina-
I joined Weight Watcher's this spring and have lost around 14 pounds so far. I think the support idea is great. But the thing that keeps me "honest" is that I have to WRITE DOWN in a log what I eat and keep "score" so to speak.

Also, Greg's idea about the instant messenger is great, AOL's is good and I have MSN Instant Messenger which I use to chat with my "support group" of mothers with young children who are Autistic.

I can also send you info on that if you'd like. Fell free to email me.

> And Nikki, it may be 3 stone but I still think you can do this with us. I'm sure there are others who have more than just a few pounds to lose and we will still support eachother through it so what do you say--give it a go. You'll be brilliant!!!You got through the brunch, you can do this.

Tina:

I'm up for anything but am hopelessly computer illiterate...though I have emailed Greg with a few questions. In my view, it may be easier for all of us to pursue our own methods for weightloss and then just use our chat room (or whatever) for progress reports, suggestions, encouragements and/or butt-kicks.... I will help in any way I can to the best of my limited abilities!

I have an idea.

Egroups. If you go to www.egroups.com, we can start our own bulletin board group. It's very simple-- and you can choose to have the messages sent to your mailbox or view them on the bulletin board. We could call ourselves DR BOB'S LOSERS (get it..) Whatever, we think of a name. I'll get it set up if you'd like--I belong to another group there--and send you the link. What do you say? By the way, I'm also doing a variation on weight watchers and ediets (www.ediets.com) Ediets is a very no-brainer diet--you put in your preferences and they spew out a a meal plan and shopping list for you. Pretty extensive support boards, too. Let me know if you'd like to investigate any of these ideas.

What do you think of these potential names for our group:

"Overweight and Depressed"
"Les Miserables"
"Fat and Not Happy"

Too edgy? Guess we could come up with something with a more positive spin, too. Can't think of anything right now!

Well, since I am not creative...I will pass judgement on the names already submitted.
Personally, I like Les Miserables or Dr. Bob's Loser's...or Ladies of the Lite! Whatever the name, count me in and please keep me informed!

Thanks to all of your efforts...

Whatever you name it, count me in! This is my second day of not drinking 5-8 glasses per day of Pepsi or Mountain Dew; instead of that, the first day, I drank half diet sodas and half flavored waters. Today, I had one sugarless Dr. Pepper and all water, the rest of the day! So I should be starting to "save" about 800-1000 calories per day.

I really need this! I have set out to lose 100 pounds. I will be forty in a little over 3 years and I want to weigh 100 pounds less by then. I am really trying to watch things now and just made a deal with my 17 year-old son , who is diabetic, that we will eat no more fast food after today!!! I'v e always said that if I am what I eat I must be fast, cheap and easy! :) I have had 9 children in the last 17 years and it has really done a number on me physically(we won't go there mentally) I am also Bipolar and am taking Carbatrol,Remeron,Gabitril,Seroquel and Klonopin. I gained 45 lbs last year on Zyprexa and Neurontin. The curse of the search for sanity! I hope we can make this work .. I live in a very small town and I could really use the support. I also like the idea of us all "doing our own thing" but maybe we could tell each other what it is we are doing and then we could have a bunch of ideas to choose from? Thanks for the idea!- Cynthia

In honor of GREG, who is taking a hiatus, I've named our sub-group ladies of the lite (thanks, Greg!) I've already invited some of you (those whose email addresses appear here) but you're all welcome. Just go to: www.egroups.com/group/ladiesofthelite and join. You can decide if you'd like to receive the emails in your mailbox or simply check the boards. Let me know if you'd like me to modify the description. I can also make it a "restricted" group (keep the weirdos out...there are some pretty funky groups at egroups).

For some reason I've been disallowed membership. I have joined 3 times now and confirmed when they sent me the e-mail but still can't access the group. It just keeps saying that the moderator hasn't approved membership to the group and asks me to register again. What am I doing wrong?

I was going to post that I took an invigorating walk in the pouring rain today and mowed the lawn(we have a huge hill, it was a workout) This is the first exercise I've done in months. I'm inspired. Thanks for taking up my suggesstion and actually doing something about it. I'm great at ideas but I suck at seeing them through. I'm a virgo, what can I say...

Hey, Kerry...Thanks so much for all you have done for us already! I can't wait for all of us to be signed in so we can get started. Today I actually SWAM in the pool instead of lolling about and then was ssssssooooooo motivated I ate a 'normal sized' dinner of veggies and salad...plus am drinking LOTS of water. Jeezzz, I feel svelte already!!!

Just wanted you to know I'm really excited about this group...speaking of magazine covers, maybe we should take 'before' and 'after' pics of ourselves...and then maybe the magazine will fly us all to New York and give us incredible makeovers...and then we can publish a book of our successful recipes...and then Oprah will want us.......OK, I just got a grip and I'm fine now. Thanks.

Litely,
Lady Jane

Thanks Tina and Kerry for this great idea..I am all inspired and today I went and hired a treadmill for 3 months. So, I will try and fit it next to the (never used) exercise bike and maybe my husband and I will exercise and talk, instead of vegging out in front of the tv which is our usual winter hibernation thing! I am carrying an old sports injury, so the treadmill is the perfect start for me..
Perhaps we could list our personal goals on the e-groups website - mine are to get fit and be able to play sport with the kids down the park without having to sit down every five minutes. Go for it you gorgeous gals!!! I must say I havent felt this positive for ages...

I just wanted to mention a few things about diets that I think you ladies should know. First off, I am currently going to school to learn how to "help" people who want to better their current health status whether it be through nutrition or exercise. The program I am enrolled in is "Fitness and Leisure Management". Now I do not hold a phd in nutrition or anything but along with studying this topic, I have read hundreds of articles in bodybuilding magazines on nutrition and diets. I also compete in bodybuilding contests which requires a very strict 12 - 16 week diet so I have learned a thing or two about dieting.

Now unless one is training for a sport, I do not believe in diets. For starters, when one diets and looses a large amount of weight in a short period of time, they are loosing mostly muscle tissue and water - not fat. This is how most diets go - one diets until they reach their desired weight. They then go off of the diet and resume their normal eating habits. This yo-yo effect slows down the metabolism permanently. If someone wants to loose weight they need to gradually make changes to their diets. Every week, you change a thing or two to allow your body both mentally and physically to adjust to these new eating habits. You should not be looking for a short term diet but rather long term lifestyle adjustments. When trying to loose weight, you should be striving to loose a maximum of two pounds per week. Any more than this and the weight loss is mostly muscle and water, not fat. For every pound of fat you loose, a pound of muscle goes with it. So the next time you hear someone say they have lost twenty pounds, you can tell them they really only lost ten.

I could go on and on for hours so I will stop here. If any of you have any questions or need any help, just make a post and I will try to help you if I can. Hopefully the website you ladies are looking into gives good advice. Good luck!

Hi ladies,

I don't exactly want to lose weight, just become fit and healthy, which is what I assume everyone's ultimate goal is. So I'm in! Hopefully we will be there to encourage and support each other through. I aim to eat healthily (especially seeing as though one of the big symptoms of my depression has been bad eating habits - chocolate for breakfast, fruit cake for lunch, mars bar for dinner, plus choccy snacks throughout the day), drink more water and exercise more - just the usual!

Good luck to us all!
Rach

P.S. Brilliant idea!

Thanks Andre for your input - I read your post with great interest and I must say it sounds like me all over! It has made me think a bit more about how I will approach this. I think I will aim for a half kilo loss per week, guess thats about one pound. Also, I will try and drink more water, less coffee and I plan to exercise a minimum of three days per week - let me tell you that is three days per week more than I am doing now. So, how does that sound, combined with three good meals a day and no junk in between?

Thanks again for your input Andre...best wishes.

Deb.
