Indigo Girls Depression Cure!

Posted by Vesper on June 14, 2000, at 18:05:21

I just wanted to share that in a recent study of one, conducted by me, the Indigo Girls were shown to reduce depression and cause spontaneous dancing! I recommend all their albums, but especially their new one, Come On Now Social, on Sony.
<[:o)
I hope the Roger Waters concert I am going to next week won't counteract the effect!

Glad to see you back for a bit Vesper. I love their song "Closer To Fine" and what it says about the mental health community. It helped to get me through an alcohol rehab two years ago. Unfortunately that's the only CD of theirs that I have although I am into women rockers. I listen to everything from Carole King and Carly Simon to Joan Armatrading, Natalie Imbruglia and Alannis Morisette. I think that Melissa Etheridge is still my favorite though.

Hope you enjoy the concert and I hope things are going better for you since the last time you checked in.

Chris

Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
You fritter and waste the hours in an off hand way
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way

Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain
You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today
And then the one day you find ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun

And you run and you run to catch up with the sun, but it's sinking
And racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in the relative way, but you're older
And shorter of breath and one day closer to death

Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desparation in the English way
The time is gone the song is over, thought I'd something more to say

Home, home again
I like to be there when I can
When I come in cold and tired
It's good to warm my bones beside the fire
Far away across the field
The tolling of the iron bell
Calls the faithful to their knees
To hear the softly spoken magic spells.

Hey V-man,

Funny you should post this on 6/14 ... saw them play Central Park that same day (just yesterday as I write). They did seven songs from Come On Now Social ... what surprised me a bit was that they did Virginia Woolf -- but then they had the violin player from Sheryl Crow's band as a guest to help cover the strings (along with the cellist they always have along and the keyboard player on the accordian (who happens to be the keyboard player on CONS and plays that wicked riff, if you can play a riff on an accordian, on Faye Tucker), which fit in quite well!). Emily took The Philosophy of Loss as her "solo" piece (a few in the band backed her) and Amy, of course, belted out Romeo & Juliet for her solo piece. And, of course, they played Closer To Fine. Joan Osborne, who moved into my former apt. building in Brooklyn right after I moved out, dammit, was also up on stage backing up on vocals for much of the night.

Told you you were on the wrong coast, Vesper. =^P

cheers,
bob

Hey, I've seen IG 9 times here in CA, with guests Jackson Browne, Michael Stipe, Kristen Hirsch, among others. I'm seeing them again in July. I have seen a lot of reviews of their shows, and the ones they play on this coast seem to be the best and most diverse.
So there! nyaa nyaa!
ps I also met them in Burbank, where they signed all my cd inserts.
:P

Steph-
Did you see the piece on him a few months ago on
television? Might have been 20/20, not sure.

No, I must have missed it. Was it interesting or insightful? I know the guy is dedicated to translating peace and spiritualism/mysticism through music. The Fox network featured a concert of his last cd, Supernatural a couple of weeks ago. I thought it was great. But I have loved all his stuff.
Later,
Steph

Steph-
Interesting & insightful. The interview was held
in his home. His wife was present too. Clips of
concerts, discussions about his spiritual side,
talk about drug use, and the main focus, of course,
was on his music and his 'comeback'.
