ultra rapid cycling bipolar

Posted by schrone on May 30, 2000, at 9:35:43

Hello,
My name is Schrone and I have been like this for as long as I can remember but recently I have been taking Paxil, it helps but not alot. I have the energy of ten men at times and then I can sleep forever not caring about anything or anyone. I feel so guilty for my kids and husband. I'm trying to get help and i have a psychyotrist and therapist they want me to keep charts of ny moods swings and I am finding it so hard to do. I have just recently took a long look back at my life and find that I fail to finish alot of tasks because I get so sidetracked by anything. I lucky though my husband is great and we have been married for 15yrs (bumpy 15yrs).I'm trying to get my diploma and I accually love doing the work but I cant consintrate alot. The worst is Icant keep friends becuase they run at the first anger spirt that I have. I very intallirable of dishonesty and I get parinoid of them thinking they do like me so I hide in the house alot. I dont know how to fix it but I found a shrink that cares and thats important. Noone in my family want to believe that this is a decease they think that I am crazy or a big bitch , so I have for the most part locked them out of my life. I know whats going on but I just seem to have no control over my emotions. I have found the more you talk to you spouse about it the more he can help bring you down from a anger bout.

I recommend the book The Thyroid Solution, even if thyroid is not the link for you, it opens up ideas about endocrinology and mood disorders, and might offer some directions to look into. I think there is beginning to be some recognition of the hormonal links between rapid cycling bipolar and various hormonal changes. Also, there is the book, Screaming to be heard, which I have not read, but which deals with hormones and psychiatric problems in women.

Welcome, and keep posting. This place has really helped me and I hope you will find good info and support here from other rapid cyclers.

Hi Schrone.

I hope you can find something here that helps.

Why do you say that you are a ultra-rapid-cycler?

I agree with your psychiatrist that you should begin to keep a mood chart. Do you experience regular changes in mood relative to your menstrual cycle?

At what age did your problems begin? 13-18? Exactly at puberty?

Is there any history of mental illness in your family, particularly bipolar disorder?

What about attention-deficit disorder? Was this ever considered?

It is important to begin to answer these questions in order to determine the need for using mood stabilizers: lithium, Depakote, Lamictal, Neurontin, etc.

Tell your husband that help is on the way and that you are not alone. Your type of problem is not uncommon and is usually very treatable.

Hello SChrone,

that sounds exactly like rapid cycling bipolar to me. You are not a bitch and your anger should go once you get the illness under control. I think keeping track of your moods is a good idea.

Asking for help and knowing what you have was about 50% of the battle for me.

I'm sorry you have this,
Janice

>Hello - welcone , you have come to the right place.. these folks have helped me through many hard times..you are not alone, I am an ultra - rapid cycler with swings almost every week if not every day.. it is important to regognize that yes this is a disease and you are facing a struggle with getting it under control... It sounds as if you have some avenues of support with your pdoc and your husband.. I have been married for 19 1/2 years and it is a dificult things for spouses to endure , maybe your husband could go with you to the doc and hear more about the illness? It has helped my husband to go with me and hear what the doc has to say...Hang in there, you will find support here... Keep us posted...Cynthia
