need information on adderall and adult ADD

Posted by juniper on May 20, 2000, at 2:02:51

i am going to be appealing my insurance company's decision not to cover adderall for me as i am an adult. (after years of covering different ADs that never seemed to work, they deny me the one drug that appears to have any effect....i will reel myself in as i could go on quite a tirade) i will research a few articles to have some concrete and specific information to include in my appeal, but i know that many of you have gone through this, so i thought that in the spirit of collaborative knowledge and general laziness i'd ask for any information or resources babblers may know of in relation to adderall's effectiveness for adult ADD and/or depression.
thank-yous to all.

P.S sorry I forgot, but on www.addult.org/ there is an article called "What's so great about Adderall" Both these articles have been written by doctors. Won't that satisfy them ? Best Wishes Jan

Juniper, please share what info you find, please,as I also need to appeal my medical insurance's refusal to cover the Adderall.
www.appi.org/books/schatze/as08.html is all that I have found to substantiate the use of stimulants to treat depression/fatigue.

James here....

My Pdoc made this kind of appeal to my HMO for Dexadrine and it was sucessful. Search on the internet under Adult and ADD to find current supporting information.

I have had the same difficulty getting Adderall covered by insurance. I had the same trouble when one son went on Dexedrine and later, another went on Ritalin. It was explained to me that the denial of benefits covering stimulants stemmed from some time ago when this class of drugs was misused, primarily for weight loss, not to mention that they are controlled substances. When my Adderall prescription was initially denied, I asked my doctor to mail or fax a letter to my agent who then forwarded the letter to the insurance company. Once he explained that a stimulant was an adjunct treatment for depression and ADD, they reversed their decision and reimbursed my expense. Did you try having your doctor justify the drug relative to your treatment? Sometimes that all it takes.

i am going to amass what i've found and put together a letter tonite...thank-you to all who have written in with information. oddly, i saw my p-doc today and while talking to him i looked over the letter he had written to the insurance company, which was pretty lame. i told him that i was writing a letter of appeal that would cite a few studies and statistics on Adderall and adult ADD (and perhaps also depression), and that i thought it would be most helpful if he could write an addendum to his letter that actually stated the clinical disorders i have and am using the medication for---something that he somehow omitted in his first letter. (even I would have remembered this!)
i will summarize my letter for psychobabble after i complete it (and though i say i plan to work on it tonite...well, you know...it should be done soon.....)
