> does anyone have experience of welbutrin and weight gain or loss ??

I gained weight while on a high dose of Remeron. When paired with lithium, I blew up like a balloon. Hardly any of my clothes fit.

Got off lithium a year ago. Wellbutrin SR was added to the Remeron last summer. Dose was doubled to 200mg in October. I've hovered at around ten pounds less than I was. Wellbutrin has reduced my appetite. If I go with it, eat healthy things, avoid high-calorie stuff like candy and alcohol, the pounds come off without much effort. Staying away from food isn't as much of a struggle on Wellbutrin. I don't even really have to think about it anymore. It just happens.

Also, I should be exercising -- I need the endorphins. I am hopeful that as summer comes and I get outside in the yard more, more weight will come off. My largest jeans used to be uncomfortably tight. Now I'm constantly hiking them up. However, I have not gotten into the next size down yet.

Best wishes.

>Hi michelle, I can definitely relate to the plump pig. I have been on paxil for two years and have gained weight. I am now on 10mg of paxil and I am also on 175mg of wellbutrin. Like the previous post, i am experiencing a reduction in appetite. I have yet to see any weight loss but it has also increased my energy level. I will keep the board informed if it works for me. Good luck, eventually I am sure the side-effect of weight gain will motivate the drug companies such as smithkline beecham to fiddle with the weight gain potential of paxil, and other ssri's.

I have experienced a tremendous weight loss on wellbutrin. I have found that for the 1st time in my life i have no emotional attachment whatsoever to food. I look at things that would have set me off before like pastries or pizza and think 'well i suppose i could eat that if i were hungry, but so what?'. I also have been more active, as in walking more than driving. I have lost aboout 25 lbs. in 6 weeks! I am very pleased as i am FINALLY experiencing what is a normal reality for non food obsessed people. wellbutrin rocks!

michele,
i also found that when taking the wellbutrin SR, i didn't feel like eating. for once in my life, i found that i was able to stop myself before i cleaned my plate, and i was able to say no to cookies because i wasn't hungry! it was incredible.

however, i'm now taking the regular wellbutrin, and i havent noticed as much of an appetite suppressing effect. it's been several days now and not a pound lost. :( (on the SR i lost 5 pounds the first week)

I was just as titillated and comforted by food ON Wellbutin as off. I also overate on other AD's.
It, did not, however make me crave candy/sweets quite as much as the tri-cyclics. Despramine (Nortriptylline) really put the 'food fever' in me.
I have tried many SSRI's, tri-cyc's, ritalin, etc...and only Prozac caused ant weight loss. And that was only about 5 lbs.)

Hi I was put on Paxil and gained so much weight, I couldn't stop eating...especially sweets. I would eat 3-5 pounds of M&M's a week with out hesitancy.

I've been on Wellbutrin for about a month, I have lost an incredible amount in sizes, but not much in actual weight. I went from 9/10 pants to 6/7, it has made a nice difference.

The only problem is I can't hold down food. I'm constantly tossing my cookies about an hour after I eat. Have major nasea and dizzieness, so I will be calling my doctor today to see if I can change or lower my meds. I'm on 150mg twice a day.

I haven't had any emotional ties to food like I used to. Eating has no longer become important to me.

Also Paxil is know for having a long term weight gain effect on patients.

Hope this helps...Max

i started taking welburtin about a week ago and still have
cravings, maybe more so. I was wondering how long
it took some of you to stop having cravings and begin
losing weight. I would really appreciate your feedback.

Thank you very much

I have taken zoloft and gained almost 50 lbs -- my weight had become a "time of day" -- it was awful. Last spring I changed to celexa and the weight got better, I lost 25 lbs. But recently, I have cravings for sweets and have gained back most of the weight I lost. The postings here are so positive. My doctor suggested Welbutrin last time I saw her but I said I wanted to do some research. I will call the doctor tomorrow and get started on the change to Welbutrin. Thanks folks for sharing.

Hi, there are many concerns posted on this sight concerning wills and weight gaid. I "sweet tooth" is not a medicaton causing wiehtgain, ti's more lifestyle orrientated.

But to answer, wellburerin--and make sure tyou get the extended relife form- is prob the only "new" anti-depressent associated with weightloss, not gain. The trade, and yes there always is...wellbuterin must be used with some caution: there is evidence that wellbutrin my cause seizures in some users. I have no backgroup of epolepsy, ect. but doc insisted i take an anti-seizue pill at the wsme time. ~Tony

Hi, there are many concerns posted on this site concerning pills and weight gain. A "sweet tooth" is not a medicaton side effect directly related to weight gain. Although may stimulate certain ares of the brain that ask for specific kinds of food, you can try to trade off with strawberris, carrot sicks, baked corn chips...you just to to get used to it, which takes a bit, but isoon it will be habit. Than relax this weekend with a pint of ben and jerry's this weekend knowig that you are eating better on the whole.

Hi,

Paxil (paroxetene) also made me balloon (12kgs in 4 months) - compulsive candy-munching, and other side-effects similar to depression... which it had been prescribed for.

I also found that thorazine (prescribed to me decades ago) made me very fat too...

I stopped paxil, and now feel much better - so presumably my latest round of depression cleared up by itself, but paxil side-effects carried on the party. I'm now also starting a diet.

Has anyone had the experience of trying to lose weight after quitting paxil? How did it go?

A seizure depends on severity. it is an ellectrical fireing thru brain i guess...i probably spelt it wrong before, now try dictionary. also, the risk is small....but my doc errors on the side of caution always...hope this helps

I recently started Welbutrin 1 week ago today. Seems to be ok, have slight headaches, but nothing major. I haven't really noticed much help with the bitchiness, ( why it was perscribed to me)i still fly off the handle so quickly, but i'm assuming it may take a few weeks to start working. I'd be greatful if it also helped shed some pounds. I stopped taking Effexor about a month ago.( stopped all at once, NOT GOOD!) I think thats what made me pack on the ole pounds. I constantly buying larger sizes when i go shopping. DOc also put me on Phentaramine to curb my appetite. that seems to be working great! .,...

The risk of seizures with Wellbutrin is very small. Unless you have some other contributing factor, I don't think it is a concern for most people.

I had no trouble losing the weight I gained on Paxil. I basically just returned to my basically good old eating habits and lost 20 pounds in two months. The last 5-10 pounds or so was harder to lose. I took phentermine for a while and exercised every day for about a month and lost it.

Last year I started taking 150 mg 2x a day of wellbutrin sr after being on paxil for 6 months. The paxil made me put on about 25 pounds (eek!) and the wellbutrin took that right off. I'm curious though about your reference to bitchiness and taking wellbutrin for it. I found that dosage made me quite bitchy and my shrink put me on 100 mg 2x a day. That seems to be better but I'm back to being the world's sleepiest person. I miss the boost the previous dose gave me.
