I was taking Trazadone by another manufacturer and sleeing well. But, the last time I had my prescription filled, the pharmacy switched to Trazadone manufactured by BarrLabs, and now I'm not sleeping. Has anyone else had this problem?

I'm no longer taking Trazodone, but this was the advice given to me when I was first given the medication. Deseryl (brand name) is the only form of trazodone with guaranteed consistency. The generics of this drug can be very different. What's more, the drugs purchased by pharmacies are based on cost at the time of purchase and, as a result, generic manufacturers can be different at any given time you refill your prescription. The trazodone you received last month may not be the same as the trazodone you purchase this month and, as you've discovered, that can be a big problem. Now, you CAN call around before you fill your prescription and ask which pharmacies use the generic brand you want but that assumes, of course, that: (1) you know which generic works for you and which doesn't';(2)you know the name of the manufacturer who produces the generic; and (3) the pharmacist will tell you if and when they change manufacturers so you can switch to a pharmacy that carries the brand you desire.
Bottom line...my prescriptions were always for Deseryl only. Luckily, my insurance at that time covered prescription costs.

I was prescribed Trazadone and it never was really effective for me. When I complained of lack of sleep to my Pdoc she said she would have to get approval before she could write a prescription for the non generic form. Rather than do that she gave me a sample of Remeron which promptly knocked me off my butt for days. So no more Remeron or Trazadone for me. I just pray for sleep.

If you want to try Deseryl, ask your doctor to fill out the form. It's not that big a deal and, if she documents that other things haven't worked including generic trazadone, the HMO may well approve it. Mine has approved a couple of drugs that they don't automatically pay for. It's your right to have effective treatment, so don't let the HMO rules or your doctor's preference to avoid paperwork to get in your way!
