Anxiety Celexa

Posted by worryworryworry on March 29, 2000, at 14:20:02

I have been taking celexa for 2 months now and feeling great but always have problems with anxiety on the last day of my period and for a few days after. Worse this weekend. A mess on Sunday. Anxiety attacks, crying fits, feelings of what if, what if, what if, you caused this, you caused this, you caused this, hold me, don't touch me, hold me, don't come near me, you don't understand, etc. No depression except the depression that can accompany anxiety (the feeling that you are going crazy and it's all downhill from here). What's a girl to assume or do? Are these feelings that appear out of nowhere anxiety? Are they treatable? Buspar, avitan (sp?), what???? I don't want to stop the celexa--no side effects and helped my depression tremendously. Hormonal problems??

HELP! Thank you!

I've been on Celexa for almost 10 months and can tell you I have the same problem during my cycle. Holy Cow am I a maniac. I almost think that taking a day off of the meds might help but haven't tried it. I'm grateful to Celexa for helping through a dark depression and am not ready to stop taking it but my husband would like a hotel room for the next cycle.

: Do you pulse your meds throughout your cycle? Doc told me to do this going forward. How long before your anxiety subsides? Mine takes over a week into my next cycle. Have you told your doctor?

Thanks for responding.

Wow - I am taking Celexa now to treat panic/anxiety! It is strange to hear it is a side effect for so many.

Buspar as far as I know is for general anxiety disorder, which generally means you wake up anxious and feel anxious/nervous all day, mostly every day. This is supposed to be caused by too much serotonin in the brain. Possibly, just my guess, is that your anxiety ould be linked to too much serotonin at certain times of the month -- ? Just a guess. Perhaps the doctor would recommend tapering down your dose around the time of your period, if that is the trigger for the attacks.

Just my thoughts..

I take regular dose 20mgs during cycle but takes me about 2 days after to return to normal. Next month I'll try 10mgs each day (only 3) and see what that does. I kid you not the family runs for cover now when the cycle comes. The post by A sounds like it makes sense that there might be too much seratonin. I'll try half dose and let you know. Dr wants to take me off in June but I'm not so confident. Celexa has worked wonders and I feel good, yet the thought of being depressed is overwhelming. Good luck worry III

I never thought I had too much celexa in my system but now it makes sense. It's like when I first started it, I had excasserbated (sp?) anxiety until I got used to it. Used to come in waves of naseau (sp?) and a feeling of doom and gloom but not a full-blown panic attack. I just thought I needed more celexa so this past month I increased to 30 mg. Maybe I should stick to 20mg and see how I do and possibly even drop to 10mg at least during my period? I know I have to discuss this with my doc, but curious about this theory.
