Help...Trying new drug Aaaaagh!

Posted by BinaryWoman on March 29, 2000, at 10:07:15

I have generalized anxiety disorder and depression. My 16 yr old son in bipolar. Friday, we're going to his pdoc to try putting him on lamictal. He's been on so many meds that the thought of a new one with the possibility of death is freaking me out.

Is this death rash really rare? Does it make you feel stoned? What's with the hair loss? Is it worth it?

He's tapering off zyprexa and prozac now and I'm on the edge of my seat hoping we avoid a rage. He gained 50 lbs in about 2 months. He's been on seroquel, risperdal, inderal, neurontin, valium, and depakote with this pdoc. Before that there was Luvox, mellaril, ritalin, and so many others over the last 10 years.

If anyone has taken this lamictal or is taking it,I would really appreciate any advice. I feel like I'm putting the kid's life at risk.

Binary Woman - The rash from Lamictal usually only occurs if the drug is introduced too quickly. By raising the dose slowly you avoid the rash. The rash, if it does occur will look like a sunburn to begin with. Watch for this and discontinue the drug if it happens. One in ten people will get a rash, but only one in a hundred will get Steven-Johnson's syndrome and this usually only happens in very young children. If you watch closely for a rash there should be very little chance of it progressing to a life-threatening stage. The effects of Lamictal in treating some bipolar depressions has been remarkable and the drug is definitely worth a try. Hope this helps - Cam W.

Don't do it, then. I feel sorry for your son. Is medication the only thing here? Maybe it's a spiritual thing, too.
