Finding a doctor

Posted by Reg on March 16, 2000, at 22:24:04

Is there any sort of on-line directory where you can find biographical info on doctors such as where they went to school, how long they've been practicing, etc?

thanks

Reg, Word of mouth seems so much more efficient and likely to result in a good match. Is there a NAMI chapter in your area, or some other advocacy or support group for specific or general mental illness? Almost any county mental health facility or psychiatrist's office could give you a contact number for such a group.

Even in a relatively rural area like ours, we have psychiatrists who range from world-class to ... well ... I'm actually being overly generous if I say there are some physicians who become psychiatrists because they couldn't keep their license practicing in any other field of medicine.

The groups always know who the good ones are -- and that's all you really need to know.

You can bet your bippy on this!

http://onhealth.com/ch1/resource/physician/zip.asp

or, for a more direct route to the site:

http://onhealth.com/ch1/resource/frameset/mainFrame.asp?ref=physician

For example: avoid this asshole at all cost:
LANGER, SAMUEL J , MD Psychiatry
CHARLOTTE-HUNGERFORD PSYCHIATRIC CLINIC
540 LITCHFIELD ST., TORRINGTON, CT 06790
(860) 496-6350

Also avoid (@ the same place):
Ms. Kathy Thayer, APRN, worthless pill pusher who took me off a protocol of
medication that worked for me simply because she doesn't have a Goddamn clue
as to her discipline. Famous quote: "I don't DO Parnate"; i.e., she doesn't
prescribe it. Dumb bitch!

You can also try here:
http://www.doctorline.com/

There *is* a better site that actually RANKS doctors, but I have to look for
it.

I honestly empathize with your frustration.

But I gotta tell you - that was funny - thanks for the laugh!

(Sorry if that sounds like an inappropriate response/comment - definitely no intention to offend you, maybe it's the late hour...)

Here's a MUCH better site:
http://www.ama-assn.org/aps/amahg.html

Go to the bottom of the page to "Search by Name or Specialty."
Do it by name ... it's easier.

Special greetings to Mark H. and Michael.

Those directories are perhaps better than nothing, but don't completely rely on them. I found a lot of it outdated - if the doc could be found at all. The AMA still has my doc half in CA and half in my state, where's he's been for eight years! He's even a member. I don't know how they treat them if they aren't a member (many physicians don't care for the AMA).
Hope you find a good doc.

Chris A.

"No. You doctor. Me patient. You don't do Parnate -- **ME** do Parnate."

Then again, if you can get her to start taking your meds for you, maybe she'll do your therapy as well ... and pay your bills, even! That outta get her to "feel your pain".

Greetings to Bob:

Good idea, and wish I had thought of that approach prior my banishment from that Clinic.
Another famous quote: "We can't help you anymore."
Does that mean I'm cured?
Do you think that broad ought to be beatified for her miraculous powers?
Please contact: Da_Pope@Vatican.org for on-line beatification.
Never in my life have I met such a cohesive collection of DUCKS all assembled in one
place: The Charlotte-Hungerford Psychiatric Clinic, Torrington, CT 06790.
I wouldn't take my dog there!
Again, thanks for the humor.

Thanks for directing us to the ama site. I found the name of a pdoc there that I am going to call for a consult. And, I discovered my pdoc is not an ama member. What should I make of that?

That he's smarter than most?

I may own a yacht, but I don't have to belong to a yacth club.
I may play golf, but I need not join a country club.
I may have a controlling interest in Alitalia Airlines, but I avoid board meetings.
I may dance with gypsies, but I don't DO fortunes.

It means nothing.

Greetings to Noa!
