ALCOHOL AND PAXEL

Posted by NATALIE on February 29, 2000, at 15:06:08

I have a friend who is currently taking paxel for depression and anxiety. She also likes to drink beer in the evening. Usually three beers each night during the week and more on the weekends. She also smokes cigarettes while she drinks. This is the only time she smokes. I know drinking is harmful if not done in moderation, and if course, smoking is always bad, but what risks are involved while on the prescribed drug, paxel?

Thank you.

Hi, Natalie, I was on Paxil for a bit while I was in a drinking stage. Though, I did not drink that much I did notice that when I did I felt the effects more. It also seemed to keep me depressed; not letting the meds do their job. As far as the actual precations, I'm not sure. There are some very good web sites that you can look up info on prescribing information. I use one of the on line pharmacies that has a drug index. (planetrx.com)

Natalie - Drinking alcohol and taking SSRI antidepressants, like Paxil, is not as dangerous as is alcohol with tricyclic (TCA) antidepressants (none of the heart problems). Still, when she is drinking at least 3 beer per night, she is peeing off a lot of the Paxil, so she won't be getting much benefit from it. Using depressants (alcohol) and antidepressants (Paxil) together is never a very good idea. I'm not saying that a glass of wine with dinner will hurt (unless it's red wine and you're taking an MAOI), but I am saying moderation, especially while trying to relieve depression, is probably a good idea. Sincerely - Cam W.

There is no question that 3 beers a night and more
on weekends (even if it is not more) is making her depression worse.
