switched from zoloft to wellbutrin

Posted by bill on January 30, 2000, at 16:05:53

I was taking 100 mg zoloft twice a day.The side effects
were really bothering me so my Dr. switched me to wellbutrin, 150 mg twice a day. I'm feeling very jittery on the wellbutrin dose anyone know how long this side effect will last? And when how long it takes for wellbutrin to work for depression and anxiety? I have only been taking wellbutrin for five days, I took zoloft for six months.

Bill - I have taken Wellbutrin SR on two separate occations for major depressive disorder. I found that by taking 150mg in the morning for a week before increasing to 150mg twice daily minimized the side effects. It is probably impractical for you to do that now. The side effects you are experiencing usually abate within 2 weeks. Even with the titration you still feel the jitteriness.
Also I have found that I cannot take my nighttime dose after 5:00pm or I will have trouble sleeping, but remember, with Wellbutrin SR you must take your doses at least 8 hours apart to minimize the risk of seizures (which is only 0.1% at 300mg/day). Hang in there and good luck. - Cam W.

bill, when I started Wellbutrin, my doctor said I needed to give it a good 12 weeks for an adequate trial period because in some people it will take that long to start working.
Also, if anxiety is a major problem for you, you may want to talk to your doctor about adding a seperate medication for that. I don't think Wellbutrin is indicated for anxiety, in fact, I would think that due to its "stimulating" effects, it might make anxiety worse. At the least, you might want to do a little research on this subject. Good luck!CarolAnn

Try to decrease the doze. Two years ago I had a similar transition, and in my opinion, Wellbutrin should be started at its lowest 75 mg., then gradually increased.
It is a great medication.
