2700 mg/day SJW 3.0% Hyperforin for Social Phobia?

Posted by Roger on September 27, 1999, at 21:24:10

Hi,

Several weeks ago I started taking SJW (Movana), which is the only compound I could find (through Medline search etc.) which is standardized to a level of hyperforin. Hyperforin has recently been indicated to be the primary, but not only, component responsible for SJW's anti-depressant effects. I'm currently taking 1800 mg, but with no noticeable effect upon my SOCIAL PHOBIA. Perhaps there's a longer period to begin feeling a therapeutic effect (???)

Anyone with experience above 1800 mg/day with a standardized product, like LI-160 (Kira) or WS-5572 (Movana)??

Roger,

I breifly experimented with 2700mgs. of Movana daily at bedtime with few benefits on my social phobia but very good results on depressioin. One problem may have been my time of dose. I tolerated the dose well but it made me very tired which is why I chose to take it before bed. I now take 900 at night and 10mgs. of prozac in the morning. Thankfully I have achieved very good results on both depression and phobias. Hyperforin has been shown to be the re-uptake inhibiting component in SJW. It blocks the reuptake of NE-DA-GABA-5ht/L-Glutamate respectively. I definitely do get a antidepressant effect from SJW but it is very subtle and I don't start to notice it until I have quit taking it. Good luck

In clinical studies the most impressive results came in tests where 2700mg was used. As long as you aren't having intolerable side effects, keep going. A few weeks on any St Johnswort isn't nearly long enough though. Clinical studies also show that response is noticeably better at 6 weeks than 4, even more so at 8 weeks than 6, and more at 12 weeks than 8. It is slower than the prescription stuff, and progressive with time. Stay with it a few months and see how it goes.
