Serzone and insomnia?

Posted by Bill on September 18, 1999, at 17:57:05

I have been on Serzone for a year and it is working great except for insomnia. I tried Buspar, but after 3 weeks, still had great dizzyness and anxiety. I go back to the doc soon, she will try me on something else. But what? The doctors guess as to what will work, I would like some ideas. I take Ambien when I really need some rest, but I would rather be on something else. Anybody have any ideas? Serzone is supposed to cause sleepiness, but not in me. Thanks, Bill.

Bill, how much Serzone are you taking? If you are having trouble sleeping,
low doses of a benzodiazepine such as Klonopin or Restoril (among others)
may help. Ambien is too strong for most and is not recommended for long term use for insomnia.
If the benzos don't work, you could try a tiny dose of doxepin (a tricylic antidepressant) at bedtime
or even a small dose of trazodone (aka Desyrel), depending on the dosage of serzone you are taking.

Bill,
Sorry to hear of your inability to sleep on Serzone. I too am one of those people that can'r sleep on Serzone. I have been taking it for 3 months and take 300mg upon waking in the morning and 200 mg a few hours before bed time. Initially this drug was prescribed to me to take any dosage at night before I went to bed. I would fly high and be up all night and miserable the next day.
So the change to split dosages during the day has helped immensely. My Dr. prescribed me Trazadone as a sleep aid and it worked real well. Now I no longer have to take the sleep aid and have the ability to sleep at night once I got used to the adjustment of the change in taking split dosages.
Good Luck and take care.

I am taking trazodone pm in addition to SErzone am & pm. Trazodone is really an AD, but even in small doses it knocks me out. My psychiatrist told me it is rarely used for depression because it just knocks people out, but it's working is similar to Serzone & therefore makes a very good sleeping aid in combination with Serzone. Also, it is generic - the cost for me is about $5/week.

Thanks for the responses! I take 150mgs in the morning and 150 at night. I go back to the doc the 27th, and I know a little more than I did. I actually do great on the Serzone, so I don't mind the insomnia too much. But if I can get a good nights sleep, I will take it.

I pay about $5.00/week for trazodone. That adds to some $15-20/month. It works for me really well in combination with serzone.
As to me, I am in this strange, a little sad state of not really feeling a part of. I am checking this board pretty much every day, I just don't write much. It makes me glad to see that you are all here and doing good. I just have this irrational tiny nagging in the back of my mind repeating that no one really wants to hear what I've got to say. (I *know* this is not true, but...)
Thax for your concern, Noa.
I love you all
Dee

Hang in there, Dee

I *do* wish you could start contributing again. You see, when I see someone's name not popping up anymore, I feel this compulsion to fill the space they've left with more of my babble ...

So, for the sake of everyone else, please write! (when you're feeling up to it ;^)

Cheers,
Bob
