Dan -

The side effects you are describing are usual when first beginning Lexapro. I am feeling the same thing as you.. the dizziness, the tiredness, the stomach problems. It tends to get lesser with time. I don't feel half as bad as I did that first week or so. Your body just has to get used to the new drug.

Lexapro is better because they've isolated the molecule that does the good stuff and leaves the bad stuff out. I think your doctor may increase the dose to 20 mg if he thinks you aren't responding the way you should be.

You came to the right place, and feel free to continue to ask the questions. None are unimportant here.

You can also buy those mouthguards in Sportmarts or Big 5's depending on where you are~~you know, sport stores.
I'm sorry~~I hope I didn't offend you? You just seem like you have a sense of humor and when you said "like I would know if I clench my jaw~I'm sleeping" I thought that was funny. I, in no way meant that YOU were a joke:( I didn't offend ya did I? Just checkin:-)
Hang in there.

I have been on efexxor for almost 3 years and was changed to Lexapro a few days ago...I don't know if the problems I'm having now are from the change in med's or what but God theres a lot of them. If someone could let me know I would appreciate it. I was fine the first 2 days but on the 3rd day...lightheaded, short of breath, dizzy, shakey, heart running away..like I was having an anxiety attach that I couldn't control...I went to bed it was so bad and then all hell broke loose...dream's that I couldn't breath, that I was having a heart attack and on and on until I woke my self up and then the other side effects hit again....this is the 4th day and I did not take it today I went back to the Effexor and have a call into my doctor to find out if that was a good thing or not...any suggestions......oh and I still feel really shakey and all the other side effects are still there I assume they will go away in a couple days or at least I sure hope so...any help or am I going completely psycho????? HELP!!

sorry to hear it's going rough there for you ... ...
... ... for what it's worth, no, you're not going completely pyscho ... really.

... ... the "discontinuation syndrome" aka withdrawals, for effexor are pretty notorious, all by themselves
... ... then add in the lexapro start-up side-effects ... ... never the best of times there
... ... it was a comfort to me to read the earlier eras of this thread while i was going through the adaptation SEs ... ... lots of good information there ...

your effexor is an snri and lexapro is an ssri ... ... by quitting the effexor and starting the lexapro, we may presume that your norepinephrine quits having its reuptake inhibited selectively, just as the ol' serotonin gets thrown into its selective reuptake inhibition ... ... now ain't that a recipe for neurotransmitter melt-down ?
... ... we should expect SEs until all them neurotransmitters get a chance to restabilize into their new equillibrium ... 'cause them unstable neurotranmitters will cause you all kind of heck
... ... know what i mean? .. ... and i think you do ... ...

... and of course quitting the lex and going back to effexor works the same neurotransmitter bad news in reverse ... ... in short, no fun ...

... ... i'd figure you'd have 3 or 5 weeks of lex adaptation SEs ... plus that and more for effexor withdrawals .. ... .. then a few weeks before the benefits of lex would kick in ...

... that is IF you were to go the lexapro route ...

... ... what was your effexor start up like ?
... ... what dosage were you on ?
... ... what were/are you being treated for ?
.. .... why Did you quit effexor?

thanks for your contribution to our thread ... ... please let us hear about how you are doing! ... please?
try to hang in there ... i'm pulling for you!

take care!

Hi, a lot of this sounds like withdrawal to me. What stands out most of what you wrote was the part about dreaming you could not breathe. I would wake up this way gasping for air not knowing if it was part of the dream or reality. This happened a few times and its something I hope never happens again. When one goes cold turkey off a med this can happen. I got sweats, head zaps, fever, nightmares, shaking, stomach pain, upset stomach, at times I really thought I was dying. You writing on this board looking for answers once again tells me your dealing with a doctor that may have had no clue this Could happen. I doubt it had nothing to do with the lexapro as much as coming off effexor. This can happen with stopping any med cold turkey. Thats one reason Im not a fan of jumping from one med to another like you did. Like in your case you want to blame lexapro as others have. Not your fault!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

from effexor, to wellbutrin, to lexapro

I switched from effexor (with awful withdrawal effects), to wellbutrin, which I loved (but had a bad reaction), now to lexapro. Have completed 8 days at 5 mg and am now up to 10mg. So far I just feel sleepy and more relaxed. Think the sleepiness must be from the med as I slept for 4 1/2 hours during the day the other day. That is not normal sleepiness. Hope that goes away. Good to find a place to learn more about it. So far, so good.

Hi again, and thank you for your response. I realize now that my actual message before did not post, just my subject line.
But I guess what I am really trying to find out, is how long should this nausea last? I did not have any side effects from taking Celexa for (on and off) 3 years. Lexapro at 10 mg is making me feel very sick which in turn throws me into a panic attack (which is why I'm taking it to begin with). I read the thread's and thank everyone for their input. This is a great forum. I was just wondering, or seeking reassurance, that this will pass and is normal as I'm only on my 2nd day...

The nausea will usually pass by end of 2nd week. You might try cutting pill in half, take 5mg, until you get through 2nd week.

Good luck and keep us posted!~~~8|8

Okay - Sorry Wayne, Jim just won the "who is funnier contest." Between the 'god bless yous' and the 'anyone got any idea how I can do my lex in lines?' - my vote has to go with the self medicator.

I'm at 20 mgs right now and I've got an appt. in a couple days. I'll tell her that the number 20 gives me anxiety and that I would be much more comfortable with something like 17.274mg and see if she has any suggestions.

I'm glad someone else is making a hobby out of this....

Ciao,
Lex

Hi Jim, you got me laughing again, not at you but with you. I have a hammer for the pill smashing. Sounds reasonable to go UP 5mg for a start or even 2.5mg. If your going for anger management dont want you getting frustrated trying to cut that little pill into 10 equal pieces. I will stay at my 7.5mg!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The hell I went through is as fresh in mind as if it were yesterday. Some people tell me I could probably get off my med. Not a chance and to much of a chance. Why quit something that I cant even tell Im taking. Like taking an aspirin!!!!!!!!!!!! TAKE CARE!!!!!!!!!

Hi, like everyone says just try be patient!!!! I guess your coming off the celexa also. Even though the 2 meds are very similar they are still different so this might be part of it. Should get better soon!!!!! TAKE CARE!!!!!

TAKE CARE!!!!!!!!!

hey Wayne!

i'm planning ... .... IF IF IF ... i ever decide (!)
to go up ... (get this!)
One milligram per WEEK ! (HA!)
... could even make adaptation ... worse ! (?)
... so once i get your hammer (eew! lexapro crumbs all over the kitchen! yuck!) ... and make me my lex powder (Yum!) then i should be weighing out 1 mg doses to add to my regular 10mg ...
... so like 11mg for a week
... 12mg the next week ... et cetera ...
... pretty nutty, huh?

... aw, it's all just a theory ... for now ...
... i really like making our depressed lex users LAUGH!! ... even At me is okay, but i know You are on my side
... just like i know you're on mine ...

(Alexis: Wayne IS the FUNNY one!! ... really!! ... Vote for Wayne !!) ... !! ... (HA! HA! HA!)

so, anyway, i'm NOT (NOT!) going to snort my lex lines!!
Honestly! ... ... some people!!

(do you think i'd get off?) ... (AGH! AH ! HA!!)

Keep On Laughing!! (it is good medicine!)
~ jim
