Someone Said Not To Use Fondly Anymore

Posted by Phillipa on January 30, 2006, at 14:03:16

I got an E-mail that suggested the way I sign my posts is condenscending by using the word Fondly. Anyone have any thoughts on this . I just thought it meant I cared. Thanks Phillipa, not using the word untill I hear back from the babble community.

I think Fondly is fine. It feels like someone cares. It's your trademark. I say don't change for anyone--they either like you or wouldn't like you no matter what you signed off with.

I never know how to end a post. It seems impersonal to just put my name, or to just put nothing. The fact that you've found something that works and is meaningful to me is wonderful.

With all that's been going on around here, that someone thought this needed to be dealt with seems strange.

Thank you for your attention to this matter,
Mr. James K. II

I'm practically speechless that someone would do that.

Please don't change your posting style. It's fine as it is, and it reflects your own personal style - which is as it should be.

What the______???

You know, people.....

I swear,.......

Why is it that....?

Ok. Can't actually finish a comment within guidelines.

Phillipa, I don't think you have a condescending bone in your body! But, if expressing that you feel caring and affection toward other Babblers is condescending....could you *please* condescend to me regularly and often?!!

At the risk of trouble here, perhaps that person could give some thought to whether it's entirely civil to use such a term to describe another person's writing style, use of language. Or, for that matter, to give unsolicited advice.

Not that anyone *has* to be civil in their emails....but it sure is a nicer world when they are.....

FONDLY,

10derHeart (proudly borrowing your lovely word!)

PS: If that message was sent to you via Babblemail, and you think it is questionable, you can forward it to Dr. Bob to look over.

Phillipa, I'm sorry that someone would upset you so much this way.

First as a general rule: you can post anyway you feel like posting. Other people can choose to read or not to read, if they are offended by what you write or the way you write it. And, if someone feels it's condescending to sign off using "fondly," you're not responsible for their reaction.

But in this case, I'm pretty offended by this. It seems as though the content and tone of your entire posts show that there's no condescencion involved, so taking that one word and objecting to it seems -- I don't know, it seems like gratuitous mean spiritedness.

Can you forward the email to Dr Bob? Especially if it's a BabbleMail, in which case it's probably covered by civility guidelines in some way...

I'm sorry, Phillipa. You don't deserve this.

I don't understand why someone might object to your using the "f-word" ;)

I think that person needs a dictionary

condescend - act in superior way

fondly - having affection or warm regard : LOVING

I think of it as your trademark too. I've always liked it.

It doesn't charm me, no. But Do I think you should stop using it? HELL NO!
It's you, and whenever you have something unique it's precious, and if there are those who love you for it, then there are always going to be those who dislike it with the same intensity.
That's how you find kindred spirits.

I like it - it's your signature greeting. Don't change it! I think it actually softens any post...just in case someone misreads something, or thinks a post is "harsh" (not that yours ever are), it's a nice way to soften the landing and remind them that you're writing fondly and not with any malice.

I always thought it was a kind, gentle way to sign your posts!
