Courtesy of Spoc. Sorry for the lateness, I am evidentally am babblemail challenged (like that should be a surprise...)

mhe weekend of June 3-5 is the annual Gospel Music Festival in Millenium Park. Just FYI.
It won't bring in anywhere near the masses that the Blues Fest does,
but it is a biggie or at least very noteworthy to gospel fans all over.
But for those wishing to avoid any such large-ish formal events,
Millenium Park is big, so should be plenty of other areas to hang out in.
Others of course may really enjoy this festival, for the music or just
cultural experience.

Another much, much smaller festival that runs June 4 to 5 and that
people may find enjoyable for the browsing is the Park West Antiques Fair.
A more neighborhoody area, one I described before actually. Is within
walking distance of the part of Lincoln Park I was talking about (with
the zoo, gardens, paddle boats, beach access, etc.). Will be musical
entertainment at that festival too.

The evenings seem like they could be tougher to plan, since there may
be many different tastes in "stepping out." But wanted to mention that
there are a couple of areas in which if y'all just walk, the
people-and-local-flavor-watching is so good that the game plan may just evolve
from there by itself. Festive outdoor cafe scene and such (hoping the
weather is mild, even at night). Portrays the real cosmopolitan side of
Chicago well, so could be "educational" for all. Such as, Rush Street
between approximately Walton or Oak to the south (detour down famous Oak
St. itself too!), and Division to the North. (Yes, some people may not
want to go too far onto Division itself, it can be an obnoxious kiddie
party area.) And/or (close enough to do both), walk around Navy Pier.
Daytime would be fabulous for that as well -- a "can't miss" really. Juts
out into the lake, beautiful view, big leisure charter boats like the
Odyssey dock there, shops and restaurants of various ilks. Often ba!
nds playing outside too.

Ok, feel free to discard any of these suggestions of course, just had
to drain them off the brain! I'm putting myself in the shoes of people
wanting viable and representative things to do while visiting a city,
while also low-pressure and that kind of flow by themselves, so everyone
can just relax.

I'd like one :) (nm)

I've got a speaker on my cellphone, but it's not all that strong.

Dr. Bob--can you borrow a speaker phone from the university?

... thanks Poet, but last week I decided to go ahead and allow myself to post directly JUST in the case of this thread (well, am managing to anyway, since I have it and only it bookmarked). So I rewrote it (succeeding in making it three words and a semi colon shorter I think ;), and posted it up there somewhere. Was going to tell you but figured you saw it. But maybe it's getting to be a tradition by now, anyone want to hear it again at least one more time before the party? A pop quiz will be given before dinner. ;-)

Everyone's welcome.

Not free, I'm afraid.

Very very expensive for me. :) Flight, hotel, etc.

Do you live in Chicago?

All you have to do is confirm you're coming.

So that makes those who have posted that they are definitely coming:

Dr. Bob
Partly Cloudy
Poet
Dinah
Fallsfall
Auntie Mel
Annierose
All Done
Toph
Rainbowbrite
Spoc
Gardenergirl
Mr. Scott

And possibly coming:

Sadaiyappan

Is that accurate and up to date? I think I got behind...

> Can we get it with slinky's latest elf picture???

The original, with the small elf? And just the picture, no text? I'll ask her. But another issue is that pictures (as opposed to drawings) may be more suited to "process" than "spot" color, and that's more expensive...

> white, pink.....?? :-)

I don't know if it's possible to order a mix or not...

The style options seem to be:

Short Sleeve
Long Sleeve
Pocket

The colors:

White
Black
Ash
Natural
Athletic Heather
Red
Royal Blue
Navy
Light Blue
Denim
Khaki
Gold
Kelly Green
Forest Green
Jade Green
Orange
Purple
Pink
Stone

The image sizes:

Full Front or Back 10-12" x 10-14"
Crest 4" x 2"
Pocket 3.5" x 3"

And so far for the t-shirts it's:

Dinah
AuntieMel
rainbowbrite
Poet

I've asked for a quote for 10 short sleeve white crest prints, let's see what they say...

We are in a middle of a restaurant. A speaker phone may be considered rude to the other guests around our table. The restaurant management may not allow that to happen.

Oh, I was not thinking about talking at dinner. I was thinking after or the next day. The restaurant would probably not like that at all.

Please put me down for a shirt too. Sounds like they will be identifiable only to "insiders" so that's cool. And I always did love that elfie.

Also, was thinking, maybe someone's centrally-located hotel will have a conference room they'd let the speaker phone call be made from? Might not be the ideal ambiance, but perhaps better than nothing... Or, I assume a conference room could be rented somewhere else, although it might be more difficult in the evening/on the weekend. Maybe hotel ones would be the easiest, perhaps at one that none of you are actually staying at, if you're concerned about privacy...

So, I remind my wife at the end of last week that I'm going to have dinner with my internet friends the following Friday in Chicago. She says, "You know that is when your brother is having the graduation party for your niece." In a temporary loss of priorities I suggest that I will just rush downtown to join everyone after dinner. She asks, "What is your problem? Your sister is flying in from Denver and your brother from North Carolina and you want to go see some people you chat with on the computer?" Trying to salvage this experience I ask, "Honey, this thing is kind of important to me, if I don't go Friday, what would you think about having them all over Saturday for a picnic? You know I've never met them." She screams, "NEVER MET THEM, THEY PRACTICALLY LIVE HERE!"

That went well.

I've come to my senses and I realize that my niece, my brother, my sister and my marriage are more important to me than this wonderful dinner with the Babblers that I was looking forward to attending. I hope that I will be able to join you guys for some part of Saturday's events. I'm sorry about the dinner.

PLAN A, FRIDAY:

Take *day or half day off work, meet babblers in Chicago from approx. 5 or 6 PM to 8 PM. Get back home with *reasonable* time left to fulfill relative duties. ("Reasonable" defined as, wife's part of the compromise.)

*YES! I'm giving you the afternoon off. You're welcome. ;-)

PLAN B, SATURDAY:

1. Tell them a short group road trip to Chicago would be a nice change of pace for you all.

2. Start out at a crowded place (e.g. Millenium Park; strolling Mich Ave; Lincoln Park; lunch destination), and LO AND BEHOLD!! Run into an old friend you haven't talked to in AGES!!!

3. Disappear for an hour or two (with wife in cahoots, as her part of the compromise).

Solved! See you there. ;-)
