Moving...and leaving therapist

Posted by skittlespanda on July 23, 2009, at 14:08:27

So I'm a newbie and stumbled upon this site and it seems very supportive and helpful so thanks to all of you in advance.

I too am struggling with leaving my therapist. I'm moving across the country (my first time really leaving my hometown) and am really scared/sad about leaving my therapist. I didn't get to be "weaned off" as i should due to the fact that i just recently brought up a HUGE issue i was having and my long time best friend passed away from cancer. I leave in 10 days and have one more session with her. I'm trying to decide how i should use my last session. She wants to talk about what i can take from therapy but i kind of want to talk about how much i hate leaving her and that i want to contact her but she already told me she wouldn't respond and i want to give her a hug but i'm afraid she won't hug me and then it will just make leaving even worse. I could "babble" on forever but i just wanted any advice/support anyone could offer with leaving my therapist!!

Thank you!

First I'm so sorry about your friend. That's so sad. And moving. So much to handle at once. Was the move planned? Have you contacted any other therapists in the area you're moving too? Can you therapist give some referrals? I feel giving a hug is not in appropriate under the circumstances. I don't know who leads the converstions in your sessions but this is your closure so speak about the things that your're really strongly feeling. sorry no contact after moving. This must be very hard for you I empathize very deeply for you. And a big welcome to babble to you. Hope you get some great advise tomorrow. Love Phillipa

I am sorry you have'nt got many replies to your post. I was hoping you would get more. Also I am very sorry about your friend. My sister just got diagnosed with cancer, so I know a little bit of what you are going through. Anyway it is your therapy, so you get to choose what you want to talk about. So if you want to talk about what it is like having her leave, you should be able to. I know how hard it is when the therapy ends, especially when you get so attached. I know also how it is to want to maintain contact with them and not being able too. About the hug thing, it is hard asking for a hug especially because of the fear of rejection. You could tell her something like what you said in your post, like that you want to give her a hug but are afraid she will say no and see how she responds or you could just make a copy of your post and bring it in. Anyway, I hope this was helpful somewhat. Take care of yourself and be good to yourself, it is a hard thing you are going through right now.

i think you should talk about what YOU want to talk about. not what she wants you to talk about. the best to you. ((hugs))

I am so sorry you have to leave , especially after bringing up something so traumatic.

Can you e-mail her when you are gone? You should talk about what YOU want to; it is YOUR session.

Hugs n Love, Sassy

Thank you all for your advice. My last appointment went really well and i even got a hug!! She even told me that i could call her for short phone sessions if i was really struggling which was a total surprise to me and makes me feel more "connected". Now i just have to decide about finding a new therapist! I hate the starting over process!
