Hi five, Dr Bob!

I get a warning that my password could be stolen by eavesdroppers or attackers because the site connection isn't safe.

But that's just because it's been modernized, aye.

:-)

Aye! Does that happen when you connect with "https" instead of "http"?

Bob

No, that doesn't happen when I connect with https://

But I need to reload the page by manually type https:// in front of the url that I got by clicking the thing to reply to your post.

Now I'm getting some little green suitcases.

Not that that means it's secure, of course.

I got an email from a bank this morning. Telling me via email how much money I had in my account. Saying that it would close my account if I didn't do a transaction soon.

When did I give the bank permission to email me information about how much money I had in it and whether or not I'd performed any transactions on that account, lately?

The world is a disgusting place, Dr Bob.

Bullies.

And your images are not secure etc.

I know you told us that privacy was only an illusion...

There isn't even the word, anymore... They are rebranding it to mean something quite different.

'Beyond security'

That's a logo for this card access system, here. You know the kind of access system that only really works to keep out the person who was given the access card.

The kind of internet privacy that only actually functions to prevent the person who was required to make up the password from accessing.

It's all double speak down here.

Seeing if I can change that. Let me know if you notice a difference.

I manually type in https://dr-bob.org/babble/admin to get to the board.

When I click on your post I get a yellow suitcase i-con and when I request more information firefox says that the site owner hasn't provided their information, or something like that.

Are people in other countries getting this stuff, too?

When I reply it is little green suitase (which must be good - right?)

My emails are all marked with i-cons, now. And computers programs are looking more like (cr)apps every day.

I was thinking it was like how when I was in the US it seemed weird to me that you could purchase milk with certain percentages or ratios of cream to milk. So, half and half or 2 percent. We have blue top (homogenized), silver top (with a layer of cream on the top), green (trim). Or how in the US you buy minced beef with different percentages of fat content. Here there is a 'prime beef' or whatever... Basically an i-con system. So you (as a manufacturer or whatever) can degrade the quality of the product without a change in i-con so the customer won't notice unless they read and understand nutritional information (that isn't even provided on unmarinated beef).

I suppose...

Internet security. Whose interests is that in? Virus protection. I don't suppose any of that is at all concerned about protecting me.

I tried to get a computer with Ubuntu installed and couldn't seem to.

Tragedy of Commons, Dr Bob.

How bad does hospital food have to be before the people would prefer to be well / out of hospital? How bad do prisons have to get before the people would rather be 'free'?

:-(

I wonder what books I'll be allowed to buy on book depository today. I wonder when my bank might decide I'm an un-person. When my passwords don't work for me, anymore.

I wonder what informational contents the university will provide for me to learn. I wonder whether I'll be a person who keeps having internet problems such that I can't get the content to play. I wonder whether the library will get me books when I request them or whether my requests will be delayed or lost etc. I wonder what books will show up for me on searches. I wonder what version of what books will be authorised for me to view?

I do see the potential for... Just deserts. But I am fearful of the potential for things to go wrong. But then, it isn't like things weren't going wrong for a lot of people before...

These boards were theraputic for me because I felt anonymous here. Was I never? I don't know. Without that... Anyway. It is what it is, I suppose.

How do I know you are really Dr Bob?

And... Something I wondered from very early on... Are you sure you're not a succession of registrars, or something??

Not that I'm questioning your expertise. I just mean...

What difference does it make?

I don't suppose it matters.

Though I figure you aren't a succession of registrars because I don't figure it would be possible for a bunch of people to work that well together.

But that might be just an artifact of my having been born and raised here.

I'm not sure what those suitcases are, sorry.

Must be!

So...

Something about yellow being http so okay for viewing content, but green being more secure for password entry. So I guess yellow is what you aim for when people view the boards and green for when you request their passwords. If that was the aim, then that seems to be what things look like for me, anyway.

> > These boards were theraputic for me because I felt anonymous here. Was I never? I don't know.

> Are you not now?

I don't feel it.

Probably because of how users have changed over the years.

Seems to me that when I started posting on Babble most of the people here had internet access because of work or something like that. They were similarly concerned about their privacy. Higher education and income levels than most, I would say.

But now it seems to me that most of the people on the internet are more interested in broadcasting themselves to as many people as they can. They have internet access because of recreation / entertainment. The people with the largest presence are lower education and income levels than most, I would say.

Over time text-based, low stimulus, literacy based presence is disappearing from the internet. To be replaced by personal pokie-machines. i-cons. poke poke poke, swipe swipe swipe, ding! ding! People will spend all day doing that.

It is... Safer for the herds than getting their fingers swiped off by machines, I suppose. Copy, paste, copy paste, login, 20 second pause, copy paste, copy paste, reload. Blank stares... Ding! Ding!
__________________________

Privacy... The social norm here is (starting to be? is?) that if you want privacy then you must have something to hide. You can't have privacy because if you have privacy you will ruin our houses by contaminating them with methamphetamine. Or you can't have privacy because then you will ruin other people by assaulting them. And so on. This is what they are selling us. We need for everything to be public for our own good.

Social embeddedness worries me.

I don't think it is that poor people are nastier than most people. I think it is more that poor people don't have the power to get away from the nasty people. Or... I don't think that poor people like living in their own trash more than most people. I think it is more that poor people don't have the power to get away from the people who do like living in their own trash.

If you live in a society where the people around you are all filming each other and uploading films of each other... Where people are all crying out for as much attention as they can get... Where people think that any attention is better than no attention and where they have nothing to lose...

Does embedding yourself in that community help you or harm you?

If you speak out about being abused by your partner and the response is to broadcast that around your community (for your own good somehow) then is that likely to help you or harm you? Wouldn't your community rather have you stay with them and remain as their personal punching bag? That will teach you to ask for help...

If I'm born in a sh*t hole and I live in a sh*t hole...

And then I can't get bank accounts or an education or access to books and so on and so forth because the people who have broadcasted me for their own personal gain... Because they get to victimise me and so I am now stuck as an unperson?

That's what I kind of see... That's the fear that I have...

The closing of ranks by those in power... Who fear being swamped by the masses, I get that.

The sorting process just doesn't seem to be working.

I don't feel comfortable broadcasting myself, no. Part of why I found solace in the internet was because the bullies didn't seem to have found it yet. But it's a land for them, now. They've ruined it for everyone who is not-them.

One needs to stay ahead of the curve, or something.

I don't know.

Just feeling swamped by things here. I don't know who thought I would be happy here... Or... I suppose as is usually the case someone decided to teach me some kind of lesson... Or (more likely) people just decided to give me sh*t because... They could. I mean, what was I going to do about it?

Which is, of course, why everybody just really wants to stay here instead of getting the hell away. But of course why wouldn't Australia, UK, Canada etc etc etc happily take a little something for nothing (people from here whom they didn't have to train).

?

Whatever...

I think it is about different kinds of people. I don't know how to quantify it, particularly. I think different people have tried over the years...

Partly it is about high-stimulus vs low-stimulus. Partly it is about enthusiasm / motivation. Partly it is about higher vs lower pleasures. Partly it is about intelligence.

Partly it is about mis-communications.

Some people show *liking* and *appreciation* for other people by running up to them and screaming at them and pawing at them. Like exuberant puppies. They can't seem to understand than when someone (involuntarily) cringes away from them that that person is not finding that greeting to be pleasant. They only escalate their greeting becoming louder and paw more violently...

I just need to minimise time spent with such people because it isn't relaxing or fun for me at all. It is unpleasant and stressful.

When I have to listen to other people squeaking and squawking and yelling and giggling... Always 3 or 4 or 5 or more... It puts me in a state of high anxiety.

When I have to walk past their trash that they leave about themselves - because they like living in it, one can only suppose.

When there are flickering TV screens and constant sounds of advertising jingles from them and over radio stations - that they voluntarily listen to.

There are people who *like* living in such environments.

And that is fine. What I don't understand is why we MAKE people live in such environments when they are unhappy there and when they don't fit. That's what doesn't make any sense to me, at all. Why do people INSIST on putting me there?

I'm sorry.

Of course, this is what it means to start over (given that I didn't start out with independent wealth). I wouldn't have the option to start over in certain other countries... Though... It would have been more likely (though not assured) that I had a higher quality education starting out in certain other countries...

It used to feel that the internet was a refuge from my world. It use to feel like I found people like me, in some sense. People who shared private things about themself (things that they wouldn't share with most people IRL). That there were meaningful connections that were made. Now it feels like the internet is the world that one needs refuge from...

I got an A for cell biology. I need to get B/B+ sort of a combination in biochemistry / public health this semester. Then need to see about disability equity place. I think... I think it actually might happen, if I get the grades and get through this semester without punching someone for assaulting me in the lunch cue... I suppose I could just get late meals... The more I withdraw the more they will persecute me... Most especially if they think they can ruin things for me. It's this whole tribalism thing... Whoever doesn't love us and want to remain with us forever is best murdered in their sleep because otherwise they'll likely go join the opposition and just as soon as murder us in ours...

I'm sorry I've been very hard on you over the years, Dr Bob. Thanks for helping raise me. I hope they let me be a surgeon. Maybe a trauma surgeon. Something... Within my capacity. We aren't anywhere near close to moral treatment of the insane, over here. Just too swamped... With immigration added to that... Refugees... And it really does seem to be the case that most people seem to like to live like...

Did you ever read a book "Sophie's World"?

It's a novel... But it has a history of philosophy by correspondance course component as part of the plot.

It picks up on a theme from Berkeley... That we are all just ideas in the mind of God.

There is a modern... Version... Of the idea that reality is informational... Mathematical...

Maybe I am just an idea in the mind of Bob?

Is that a civil thought, I wonder?
