Racing thoughts

One of the worst things I suffer is racing intrusive thoughts. Is anyone familiar with a med or natural treatment for racing thoughts. It's extremely frustrating.

I often have this problem. On the natural side, the best treatments I have found are:

-magnesium
-omega3 high in DHA (and low in EPA)
-niacin
-ginger root, green tea
-taurine
-darkness therapy

What meds are you taking, and what is your diagnosis?

I'm bp1 and have been on Lamictal (150mg) since 2007. During the same period I've always also been on a small dose of Seroquel (between 25 and 100 - currently 50) at night mostly "for sleep". That nightly dose is usually good enough to keep my racing thoughts at Bay w.o. cauing any weight gain.....

If you have difficulty getting to sleep I'd recommend it.

I'm at 25mg of seroquel for sleep. Do you think 50mg might help with racing thoughts? Will a higher dose of lamictal help?

Neurofeedback might help. So might diet.

Also,

Are your racing thoughts mood congruent? In other words, do you have racing thoughts when depressed / normal, or just when hypo/manic?

Paradoxically, I find lithium sometimes induces racing thoughts and if I back off it a bit it subsides. Sometimes adding a small dose of antidepressant helps my racing thoughts. However I am not typical and may have some ADHD.

It's funny...we have neurofeedack in our town and I was thinking about giving it a shot...very expensive! I always have racing thoughts but it seems way worse right now. Might be lamictal.

I did 40 sessions of it, and it is expensive. I'm glad I did it. While neurofeedback didn't do all that I'd hoped it would do, it's the treatment that's helped my depression and anxiety the most, long-term.

Omega-3 (from fish oil) helps my racing thoughts.

For some people, however, it can paradoxically increase racing thoughts.

The paradox may lie in whether one has a high adrenaline / acetylcholine ratio (or vice versa).

A question. Does coffee increase your racing thoughts or decrease them?

drop the lamictal its useless at 50 mg and probably just causing side effects.

Try 1-2 mg of Risperidone. This should help with the racing/obsessive thoughts.
