To take or not to take, that is the question

Posted by Racer on September 9, 2005, at 20:09:39

Lamictal again. If you've read my other posts about this go 'round with Lamictal, you'll know that I'm experiencing a few less than appealing results: terrible gas (might be sympathy symptom for my cat, who's experiencing Stinky Butt Syndrome), constipation, sleep disturbances, a rash on one leg that may be related to the drug (NOT "The Rash"), and worsening depression. In other words, it's not being all that friendly to me right now.

Mind you, I'm titrating up, and only at 100mg so far. From what I've read, Lamictal pretty much kicks in for depression around 200mg. Today is the day that I should be raising the dose to 150mg, but I'm not sure. Needless to say, I didn't get around to calling the doctor today. (Ha. As if I get around to doing anything these days.) I was thinking that I should just stay at 100mg, then I was thinking I should raise it to see if it started to help, then I thought maybe I should just stop it, and then I thought maybe I should scream loudly...

So does anyone have any advice? And can someone who's taken it for a while tell me about these effects it's having on me? Did you start out feeling much worse, and then have the sun come out? Or did you start out feeling this bad on it, only to have it get worse at therapeutic doses? Anyone?

So far, it's really been a total loss. Any hope it'll change?

I had severe gas at 100 mg, but it now appears unrelated to Lamictal.

Do you have lactose intolerance? There is more lactose in Lamictal pills than any other ingredient. Some say there's not enough lactose in the pills to cause a problem, but others say it could cause problems, if you have a severe intolerance.

From the prescribing info.:

LAMICTAL Tablets are supplied for oral administration as 25-mg (white), 100-mg (peach),
150-mg (cream), and 200-mg (blue) tablets. Each tablet contains the labeled amount of
lamotrigine and the following inactive ingredients: lactose; magnesium stearate; microcrystalline
cellulose; povidone; sodium starch glycolate; FD&C Yellow No. 6 Lake (100-mg tablet only);
ferric oxide, yellow (150-mg tablet only); and FD&C Blue No. 2 Lake (200-mg tablet only).

THANK YOU! I'll try Lactase with it tonight! (nm) fires
