Mirapex = water retention/bloating?

Posted by Emme on September 11, 2004, at 8:08:43

Has anyone noticed such a thing? Jeans are getting tight, but the number on the scale is the same.

Thanks.

How is mirapex? Don't have the problem you are describing, but am looking for experience on how it works for people.

Are you taking it for a mood disorder or for RLS ?

I'm using it for mood and, hopefully, motivation. I think it's having some positive effect. My mood is not so terrible these days. I'm tired a lot. But I don't know if I can blame the fatigue on Mirapex. I would really like to have a few bursts of productive energy. Are you currently trying it? If not, I'd encourage you to give it a try.

Emme--

Can I ask you a few questions? Sorry I don't have an answer to the water retention query.

I am a rapid cycling bipolar II. I take 750mg of Depakote and .25mg of Risperdal. The Depakote slows the cycles, and the Risperdal helps with agitation, and used to help with sleep. Unfortunately, I am completely apathetic--not caring about anything--no feelings at all (especially not pleasurable!) I would give ANYTHING to have feelings again.

Do you find that the Mirapex is causing you any sleep problems?

What is your diagnosis if you don't mind me asking?

Have you heard anything about it inducing or exacerbating rapid cycling or causing switches into mania?

I'm curious, and I haven't gotten a response on any of the older threads. Sorry to butt in!

Thanks for any info!
Take care,
Katy

Hi Katy,

Yeah, well, it was a long shot. This is another one of those "gee, my body's not cooperating - maybe it's the meds" moments. Probably nothing...

My moods have been so aberrant for so long that I'm not sure I'd recognize normal feelings if they jumped up and bit me in the "donkey synonym". That said, I do seem to have actual emotions and they're not all bad. I could use a bit more "zip" and get up and go. The mental part of my apathy is not gone, but it is less. I just need my body to cooperate and feel less fatigue. The mirapex is doing about half of what I was hoping for, and for me, that is a very good response. I'm taking a crumb. I might try a little more. Bring it up with your doc if you haven't already. I think it would be worth a shot. Good luck.

I need to get my sleep under better control. The Mirapex doesn't seem to be making my sleep problems any worse.

Major depression/bipolar II.

No, I haven't. My pdoc said she's had good luck with it and I don't think she'd give me anything that has a high risk of switching. But...who knows, your pdoc may have a different perspective.

You're not butting in at all.

cheers,

Thanks Emme!

I was hoping for a reply. Thanks for taking the time. I'll bring it up with my pdoc next time. I'm a little frightened to try something new again.

I just had a bad experience with abilify. I read up on the partial dopamine agonism, and I thought it might be the ticket for me. Unfortunately, it did other stuff to me (maybe not related to the dopamine agonism, and more related to the serotonergic effects.) I had really, really, bad anxiety and insomnia.

But I still have an instinct that most of my problems are dopaminergic--For example, when I dip into my "low" two days a week, I clench my teeth involuntarily. Apparently, Mirapex is a treatment for bruxism. So I'm curious if it would help that AS WELL as the depression and apathy.

I, too will take any crumbs of improvement. I feel thankful to be about 85% better, but I still want to be 100%. It's a curse, I think.

I'll keep you posted on it.

How long have you been taking Mirapex? Have you read that it poops out? Any other comments are appreciated.

Thanks again,
Katy
