Medicines/Supplement that might help 4 coronavirus

Posted by PeterMartin on March 3, 2020, at 13:15:00

I've been running queries on pubmed (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/) looking to see if meds/supplements I've taken may have antiviral properties. With the risk of coronavirus becoming a reality here are my 3 I have things taken based on my searches that could be helpful:

Lithium (has positive effects against herpes/hiv)
Stinging Nettle (Tested against other coronavirus w some positive effects)
Dandelion

Anyone else have any recollection of medicines or supplements they've taken that may have had antiviral or prolung properties?

I figure since our bodies can beat it any slight edge we can give the immune system could be significant.

Might be nice to go back on a low dose of Li in my case also (so long as it doesn't spike my bp like last time I took it w Marplan).

Hope everyone is doing well!

I came across this. While influenzas are not corona viruses, this is interesting nonetheless.

Pubmed seems to be down but there is this....

Palmitoylethanolamide (PEA) is a food component known for more than 50 years. ... Since 1970, the anti-inflammatory and other immune-modulating properties of PEA have been shown in a number of placebo-controlled double-blind clinical trials on influenza and common cold.

Yes. Interesting. Somewhere I read about using the molecule as a scaffold for anti-viral treatment. Maybe this, but at this point forward above my pay grade.

I need to look into this one more. It's bizarre but I came across it a few weeks ago but I can't remember why. At first I thought it was the other PEA that you can't take w MAOis. Confusing they have the same abreviation.

I am taking this and it may be the reason why I am still in the (home)gym. I'm a veteran of elbow tendonitis and this time, I was able to avert the full-blown elbow tendonitis and I am still working out.

Phenylethylamine, yes. You can take it with MAOIs with caution. Its mechanism of action is the same as for amphetamines.

Low-dose naltrexone (LDN) modulates the immune system. I've been taking it off and on for over ten years, and have noticed that I get fewer colds while I'm taking it. Other people who have taken LDN have said that it strengthens their immune system.

Right but this is a -different- PEA. It's not phenylalanine it's Palmitoylethanolamide. Both are abbreviated PEA.

The one that could be helpful again viruses is Palmitoylethanolamide.

Have you tried foam rolling (firmly massaging) your triceps and also the muscles on the meaty part of your forearm?

I just say this because sometimes runners experience 'shin splits' or a sort of nagging irritation that can be relieved somewhat by foam rolling / massaging the front of their shin (tibialis anterior).

And sometimes nagging irritations around the elbow region can be linked (in part) to tight muscles in the triceps region, particularly.

I have personally found that when I have elbow irritation it is fixed up by foam rolling my triceps that tend to get a bit over-active from my overhead pressing.

just a thought.

I searched this just now and found your earlier post about (palmitoylethanolamide) from last November.

Are you still losing weight w/ it?

Do you think it could be a risk for manic breaks? Or does it not really seem to affect your mood much?

I'm currently taking Marplan (MAOi) so I wouldn't want to take anything that could be extremely risky but the research makes it tempting at this moment.

n/m this seems to suggest palmitoylethanolamide supplementation could pose some risk for bipolars of which I am one.

https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/15622975.2018.1449966

Don't need a manic episode right now so unless I"m reading that wrong this is one sup I'll skip. It's interesting that pot has almost always been in my system when I've gone manic (many times from '99 to '09). Ever since I stopped in 2009 I've only had had one break in 2015 when I had to discontinue Marplan and started Belviq (now off the market).

Familial abnormalities of endocannabinoid signaling in schizophrenia
=
Objectives: Epidemiological and experimental evidence suggests that the endocannabinoid system plays a pathophysiological role in schizophrenia. This is reflected by elevated cerebrospinal levels of the endocannabinoid anandamide in schizophrenia and its initial prodromal states.

Methods: We analyzed plasma concentrations of anandamide, 2-arachidonoyl-sn-glycerol, palmitoylethanolamide and oleoylethanolamide from 25 twin pairs discordant for schizophrenia, six discordant for bipolar disorder and eight healthy twin pairs to determine hereditary traits.

Results: Twin pairs discordant for schizophrenia or bipolar disorder had significantly higher levels of anandamide and palmitoylethanolamide compared to healthy twins (both P < 0.002). Non-affected twins discordant for schizophrenia, who developed a psychotic disorder within 5 years follow-up showed lower anandamide (P = 0.042) and 2-arachidonoyl-sn-glycerol levels (P = 0.049) than twins who remained healthy.

Conclusions: We suggest that the protective upregulation of endocannabinoid signalling reflects either a hereditary trait or mirrors a modulating response to genetically influenced cerebral function involving, e.g., other neurotransmitters or energy metabolism.

Phenylethylamine, not phenylalanine, the latter is the precursor.

Specialized pro-resolving mediators (SPMs). This is a new supplement. I like it a lot. It's an anti-inflammatory that resolves inflammation rather than blocking it.

https://www.lifeextension.com/magazine/2019/ss/resolve-and-repair-inflammatory-damage

17-HDHA is one of the ingredients in the SPMs capsule I take. It enhances the immune response against the influenza virus.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25392529

SPMs are prolung. They're being investigated as a treatment for chronic inflammation and infection in cystic fibrosis.

https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fphar.2019.00252/full

The kind I take is "Pro-Resolving Mediators" from https://www.lifeextension.com

Here are some other brands:

https://thegreenpharmacy.com
As "SPM Complete"

https://www.nhc.com
As "PRM Resolve"

https://www.metagenics.com
As "SPM Active"

Thanks Hugh for that suggestion. Looking into it.

Does it have any effect on mood? Do you think it would be contradicted w/ any common psych meds?

Looks to be related to EPA in fish oil is that right?

You're welcome. I don't know of any contraindications with psyche meds, but specialized pro-resolving mediators haven't been available for very long. You might try taking it every other day or every third day in the beginning to see how it affects you. I can feel the effects of one capsule for over 48 hours.

You're right, it is derived from fish oil. But it's far more effective than any fish oil I've ever tried, and I've tried a lot. It does elevate my mood.

This is where I order it:

https://www.lifeextension.com/search#q=pro-resolving%20mediators&t=coveo4A2453FD

You should use one of these discount codes at checkout:
