Subject: Thyroxine-iron interaction
I recently learned about an important drug interaction ... from an endocrinologist, who ... informed me that iron interferes with the absorption of exogenous thyroxine and that the two should never be taken within four hours of each other.
I was unaware of this interaction, and I'm posting it as an important and apparently little-known fact, since no other psychiatrist I've talked to has been aware of it either. I will now be warning everyone for whom I prescribe thyroxine about not taking iron with it.
