Safety of neuroleptics during pregnnacy is relatively well described. High potency neuroleptics have not been associated with a higher risk of malformations even when used in the first trimester. There is no good data regarding potential for long term neurobehavioral sequelae associated with in utero exposure to any of the psychotropics.

We have had considerable experience using neuroleptics during pregnancy particularly in women with chronic mental illness. Risk for decompensation is so high in this population in the setting of medication discontinuation with potential for behavior that puts mother and fetus at risk that we have typically continued drug before, during, and after pregnancy.

The Pregnancy Evironmental Hotline is a gem! 800-322-5014. Great information only a phone call away.

No particular problem with perphenazine except perhaps post-natal sedation.
