I understand that Roche will soon stop manufacturing Marplan (isocarboxazid) in the United States. They already stopped selling it, but the manufacturer has made it available to selected patients as compassionate use. I'd advise contacting them. One patient got a year's supply recently.--Katherine Whipple, Ph.D.

Roche has assured me, for the American Society of Clinical Psychopharmacology, that they will go on making Marplan available here at no charge until they've sold Marplan to another interested company. When their supplies run low, they've promised either to make more or bring it in from overseas. The FDA is insisting on a considerably more costly procedure for getting Marplan relisted than it seemingly should need under the circumstances. Docs can get several bottles of 100 each from Roche, at no charge, simply by requesting them.

With reference to the continued availability of Marplan, given that the rights to manufacture it in England may have been sold by Roche to another company: Inquiries of Roche here produced the answer that, at least for the moment, it's not an issue because they "still have several years' supply left". If they should get low or run out, they say that there is no reason to think they would not honor their commitment to us to keep it available here.

I've learned on good authority that isocarboxazid, which Roche has stopped manufacturing as Marplan, is now being marketed by Cambridge Laboratories in England under the name Isocarboxazide. They can supply it on a named-patient basis to U.S. physicians. They believe they have enough market for it to continue manufacturing it.

A few phone calls earlier today produced the info that Roche is out of the Marplan business and has sold the rights to manufacture Marplan (isocarboxazid) to a company called Oxford Pharmacueticals in NJ, a company I never heard of, but not related to the insurance company by the same name.
They say they are now in the process of letting pharmacies and their wholesalers know that it is available for order from them.
They will also sell directly to the MD.
