How to wear hair?

Posted by sunnydays on February 9, 2008, at 20:02:48

Ok... so a really deep question... How do I wear my hair for an upcoming interview? I'm female, have long, very thick wavy hair. I normally wear it up in a ponytail. Is that too casual for an interview? I read that women who wear their hair up are taken more seriously, but what kind of up? And is it ok to wear a colored blouse with my black suit (not bright)?

Decisions, decisions. Times like this I wish I was a guy! It always seems to me like they have far fewer decisions to make about things like appropriate clothes.

Sunny Days,I think the pony tail is too casual. If I were you, I would pull the front back on each side with a nice clip, simple tortoise colored or metal, perhaps.

Shirt color should be relatively neutral that goes with the black suit, like ivory or gray but then I would wear some nice earrings and a necklace or a scarf, to give it a dressier look.

What type of environment is the job for? Business, retail, other?

Let's see, I wore a pantsuit (grey blue) with a cream colored blouse and the suit has a pretty scarf that matches the suit in colors of blue, gray and black.

My second interview I wore a plaid (subtle) jacket with a navy skirt and a soft lilac sweater.

I think the best scenerio is professional look but with a hint of color and jewelry to accent the rather basic look.

Good luck with the interview.

It's for a graduate school. So do sort of a half-up, half-down hairdo? I have a collared shirt that I was thinking of wearing with the suit that is a deep turquiose-y blue, and just simple jewelry, gold or silver. I just wasn't sure if the shirt was too dark or not. I might have an ivory sweater I could wear with it - would that be better? And does the suit jacket ever get taken off at the interview or is it left on? All these things I just do not know...

SD, I have no experience with an interview for graduate school, so it may be different than one for a job. Probably is and I would think it would be more casual, but I think it's always better to be better dressed than too casual.

Either shirt seems fine. I like neutrals and then you can always wear a nice scarf that has more color around your neck. The hair is up to you but I think pulled off your face either up as you wear it or with the front pulled back and the rest long in back.

What type of grad program? That might be a factor too, say a grad program for business vs psychology would be very different as far as expectations of dress go. Obviously business would be more formal.

Good luck.

Sunnydays your hair sounds lovely I like the idea of it cascading down you back in waves but off your face if hair is dark tortoiseshell clips would be lovely. Phillipa and good luck
