What kind of writer are you ? Mozart or Beethoven?

Posted by Happyflower 1 :-) on September 9, 2007, at 8:11:22

I am more like Mozart, who writes everything in my head and then put the finished piece on paper without making too many adjustments.

But it so hard being in a writing class where you need 2 drafts of everything. What do I do, give my finshed work both times? LOL

My DH see's me this morning, and he asks what am I thinking about. I say I am writing my paper. LOL
Is anyone else like this? Or are you more like Beethoven, who writes out everything and hopes to put it together some day?

I'm beethoven - without a doubt.

My manuscripts and the like come out more in the form of a jumbled mess, then I start fixing them.

It's like they live in the disorder of my head and I have to get that chaos out. Then I start putting them in order.

It's not the most efficient way to write, but it works for me.

Hi Happyflower,

I'm definitely Beethoven, I edit like crazy. Though I would hate to turn in my drafts because I edit like crazy to make it pefect. I'd probably cheat and turn in fake drafts with minor mistakes. Once again proving Poet is indeed crazy.

I find it interesting on how people write, I think most write like Beethoven. My DH writes like this.
Maybe I am crazy because I edit the stuff in my head! lol The voices tell me what to write! Just kidding, really, you believe me, don't you?

Oh, off topic, I have to get my thyroid tested, but my doct said I could try taking Prozac every day instead of every 2 weeks. I wonder if it will work faster since my body is somewhat used to the stuff for at least 2 weeks at a time.

Hi Happyflower,

I do write poetry the same way. I edit like crazy. Way back when before PCs I never edited I just let the words flow pen on paper. I have pages of notebook paper with poems dating back to when I was in high school.

I think it must be kinda of interesting to see your thoughts over that many years. I wish I still had my stuff from that long ago, but my mom threw it all out, so I have very little from my school days.

If you all don't mind, I think I will hang out here on this board, it seems to be the only safe place for me. Talking about what is going on in school is safe mostly.
Today my first class is cancelled because my prof. is sick. Cool for me because I didn't get home from jazz band until 10pm last night. Today I start guitar lessons again, part 2, so I am excited. So today I have a boring research class, yoga and then guitar. Seems weird, but I am weird. lol

In responce to your question, Happy, I have no idea what kind of writer I am. I start writing things in my head, but if I don't put them on paper then I lose them (oh the joys of ADD), but at the same time, I have a very hard time editing my own work because it all makes sense to me (especially in french... "What are you trying to say here?" "Uhhh this _____." "Well... that's not what it says...")

Your semester sounds fun Happy! I hope you enjoy it! My classes seem to be the best of a bad lot :(

HI Gee!

How the heck are ya? I am liking school a lot, it is my sancturary from real life! lol

I showed up to my group guitar lesson tonight, and I was the only one! That meant I had to sing by myself the music before we played it! Well almost by myself, the instructor sang too, but I wanted to die on the spot. lol It is one thing to overcome your fear of public singing, but to do it by yourself, that just is insane!
Whew!
Yoga was insane too, it is suppose to be relaxing. But this instructor who is also a dance teacher, made it more like survivor of the fitest. She hasn't a clue on what yoga really is about. whatever!
I am just happy to see you on the boards, I miss ya!

Awww thanks Happy, you're sweet.

Right now, I'm slightly overwhelmed and have no idea where to start with all this work I have to do!!! I have 5-6 papers, and 2 presentations... And I have to get my applied study proposal in...it's due tomorrow :-S

Even though you ended up singing by yourself, guitar lessons sound like a lot more fun than linguistic norms.

I think you need to give your yoga instructor a lesson on yoga... it's very clear she has no idea ;-)

Happy singing!! I gotta head back to reading and researching... ick

Remember baby steps! lol Okay, I know better said than done. I have a first draft due tomrorow and it is still mostly in my head. LOL It is about Snow White's evil "stepmother" who really is her mom.

Yeah, I think I will stick to music and psychology. lol sounds scary to me! What do you do in that class?
>

Yeah, I know, I mean we are suppose to follow our breath, well I couldn't even catch my breath. geeze! Heck she hasn't even explained about the 4 part breath, well maybe she doesn't know. I dont' know how you would even do that jumping around like a lunatic. If this was my first experiece at yoga, I would have quit. At least the class is a pass/fail class, all I have to do is show up.

> Happy singing!! I gotta head back to reading and researching... ick

Hey! singing? NOT ME! But I do have another solo in the jazz ensemble, I wish they would leave me alone. I am not even a music major, so buzz off! lol Let the music majors do the work, I just want to sit by and have fun. Solo's just aren't natural. Who's insane idea was that, to play by yourself? Probably a psychologist musican. lol aauuuuggghhhh!

Well I need to get ready for class, trumpet lessons and my fav. philharmonic rehearsal with the conductor with curley hair and dimples and an England accent. It is just not fair for him to be that talented and cute and MARRIED! not fair at all.

Gee! The above thead is for Gee! Gee wiz! (nm)

Sorry it's taken me so long to get reply Happy! With no internet at home until just a couple days ago, internet time just wasn't happening.

How's your music and all that going?

I'm in a procrastination rut... it all seems not too bad until the middle of the night.. then AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH

Uh...I hate to break it to you, but falling in love with your first draft is not the way to be a good writer. I tend to edit as I go, so I have a similar problem a lot of the time. But just because I look something over and don't see any problems, and even if it's up to par with my classmates, doesn't mean I think it's done. Take your writing to someone who can give you good constructive criticism; it sucks when someone tears up one side of your precious composition and down the other, but it helps you see things you wouldn't otherwise have seen, and that's how you become a better writer.

But in answer to the question, I'm a bit of both. I usually conceptualise things in my head, set them out, and then start slashing and burning and gluing bits on until I've got something I'm happy with.
