I'm going to hire a tutor

Posted by Deneb on September 7, 2007, at 16:43:55

I just emailed a prospective tutor. I have one class, organic chem. If possible I would like to get an A in this class, that would be unbelievable. I would settle for a passing mark though.

Here is what I'm going to do...

I'm going to get tutoring or homework checks two times per week. On Mon. I'll study 1.5 hrs. On Tues zero hours. On Weds. 1.5 hours. On Thurs. 1.5 hours. On Friday I'll study 6.5 hours. On weekends I don't need to study. I'll study 11 hours a week. The prof recommended studying 2 to 4 hours per hour of lecture. I have 3 hours of lectures/week.

Mon, Weds, and Thurs I will get to work early at 1 PM and study until 2:30 PM then eat something, then work. Tues I got to class then work.

I'm going to do this!

Good job, Deneb. Be careful, though, of setting yourself up to slide by saying you'll study 6.5 hours -- that's an awfully long time to study, in one go. Maybe look at alternative ways to set it up? Or say, "I'll read this section on Monday, do this project on Wednesday..." Or something like that?

I've found I do a lot better if I have a timer going. Doesn't that sound silly? I can tell time -- even on the analog clock! Yet, a timer really helps.

The other thing I thought of when I saw your subject line was, "OOOOHHHH!!!! Study groups!!!" I think the tutor is a great idea -- but I think study groups would be absolutely great for you. Not only would you get company studying, and do some good work by having some other minds to bounce things off of, but you'd also get some really good social practice. I know you've mentioned being a bit nervous around people at times -- study groups are great ways to get practice, in a fairly safe place.

Good luck with your class, Deneb. I hope you do well in it -- and I hope that you do find a study group. They can be a hell of a lot of fun, too.

You are right Racer, 6.5 hours in one go is too much studying, especially when it's in one subject. I'm going to try to come up with something else. Maybe I don't even need to study 11 hours/week. In the past I didn't do very well, but I also didn't study very much at all. Maybe I should study based on how well I think I know my material.

I will see what I can do about the study groups. The prof recommended them too.

On Tues. I meet up with a prospective tutor. I hope it goes well.

Today I got some studying done. I'm working on my first assignment. I'm almost halfway done. I'm going to try to finish my assignment tomorrow and read ahead for the next lecture.
